Infrared Canal Walk.
on: July 31, 2014, 03:14:01 AM
Today, my neighbour and I took a nice walk at the Sault Canal. Cross the canal and you find yourself on Whitefish Island. On this day, I decided to take my Canon Rebel XS which was converted for infrared photography. Here are some photos for you.

Red Squirrel.

Black Capped Chickadee.

We brought some peanuts to entice the furry denizens to come out. This black capped chickadee got confused and though it might want a go at the nuts.

A Blue Bird. This guy did eat several peanuts.

Bringing food along sure helped us make temporary friends.

We even brought some sunflower seeds. I didn't think the chickadees would actually eat out of my neighbour's hand. I was wrong.

Where are those nuts?

Yellow flowers growing next to the trail.

Canada Gees.

One of the many wooden bridges found on the island. That is a red wing blackbird on the railing.

More Canada Geese.

One of the many seating stations found on the island.

Cattails.

Some more little flowers.

A female Mallard.

Happy I wasn't planning on going to the US. That is a stand still lineup waiting to get to the other side...which is a long way off.

A dark gray Pigeon.

Probably my favorite shot, of my favorite architectural building in Sault Ste Marie Ontario, the Canal Post Office.

I find that applying infrared filters in a photo editing software gives great results,
especially if shooting in RAW.

Not the same as true IR...but digital filters do give you a somewhat feel. I didn't like the effect, so went out and bought a dedicated camera. detron, use the filters first once you get your DSLR and play around with the settings. It is cheaper and does give you a somewhat similar effect.

Nice! I've only done IR on a cheap webcam. I don't have much luck with cameras so if I got a modded one, it'll probably break.

You can do IR without modding, it just takes several minute exposures. The IR-blocking filter lets a leetle bit through.
