my EDC choices
on: September 16, 2014, 06:30:10 AM
There is a non-Victorinox in there, but its a good one.  Which would you choose?

The first is a Spyderco Paramilitary 2, followed by a Harvester...... I think you guys can call the rest.  An Orange Farmer, Black pioneer, also an old soldier in there and a couple of Alox Classics.  The Black Pioneer is whats in my pocket the most.

I would go with the para2 then either of the two saks without keyrings.  :)  Mostly because I want a para2.

Nice selection! The Harvester is my favourite there.

The Harvester is my favorite as well.  The harvester lacks a keyring - which is sometimes a good thing.  I carry the para 2 (its a sweet knife!) mostly on the weekends, when I'm outdoors.  The black pioneer I carry the most (steadily for the past two years at least) because its all beat up and used, and with the keyring and a P-7 suspension clip it fits the pocket perfectly. If I ever bust that black pioneer, I can switch to something fancier!

The collection continues......... thank you for your responses.

Thanks for the comparison pics.

I hadn't realized just how big a para2 was. I'm glad I didn't buy one recently.

I'm not a big fan of alox, but if I had to choose from the above it would be the Harvester and one of the Classics  :)

+1, this is my EDC: a black pioneer with keyring ground off and a black alox classic.

Basically indestructible.

If it was the Soldier with hollow rivet, then ... :D
Black Pioneer is the best choice, and for that very reason it is the most in your pocket ;)

I'd probably go with the pioneer because it's close to what my own edc is; the Wenger SI. But then any alox SAK is better than the 'other' knife that is a non SAK. I guess I just have little use for the modern lock blade knives that give only one option; to cut. Next to SAK's, all other knives are coming from behind.

Pioneer in the city, but I would want the Farmer at the hunting camp for the saw.

I have tried a dozen times to start carrying a larger one handed opening folder with a pocket clip, even bought a Benchmade Griptillian and was determined to carry it.

It never lasts more than a few weeks and I go back to carrying a Vic, Case Trapper, or Leatherman.  I use the tools much more often than the blade and the clip knife just gets in the way of the other stuff I carry in my pocket.

I admit that I have never understood the lock blade knife thing. Even when Buck came out with the 110 folding hunter in 1963, I looked at it and wondered why anyone would waste money on a heavy bulky knife that weighted a ton, and had only one single blade, and therefor only one single function. In 1963 I was used to the scout knife that had been my 12th birthday gift. In the army, they passed out those all steel scout knives they called demo knives like lollypops at the doctors office. By 1969, I had my first SAK that I bought in a little knife shop where I was stationed in Germany. It was all downhill after that. If I had a pocket knife on me, it had some tools on it.

Even with the advent of the lightweight plastic handles and the one hand opening knives like Spyderco, I cannot understand why? They are good for nothing but a single function, while even my old boy scout knife I got at age 12, had more uses. Add in the SAK's with a second blade like the cellidor models, or the tools on the alox, and I still wonder why anyone would bother with a Spyderco or Benchmade, or any of the whiz bang tactical wonder knives. To me, they have only one real advantage over a SAK, that of a weapon that nobody wants to talk about. The lock on a knife blade is for stabbing. I'm more interest in the knife as a cutting tool. Since I don't see the knife as a weapon, or at least a decent one, I have no use for a Spyderco. I got one once many years ago as a gift, and it sat in my sock drawer for a few years until I gave it away.

If it comes down between a Vic pioneer or a Spyderco or any other tactical or lock blade knife, I'm going with the pioneer or any SAK every time. I don't need to be walking around with a knife that is a very poor defense weapon as well as a very limited single function tool. If I need to defend myself from something, there's other better choices. Give me screw drivers and awl anytime. Can openers are gravy on the potatoes.
