RECOMMENDATIONS! Leatherman Fuse, Kick or Skeletool to compliment a SAK?

I carry a SAK compact and the skelly fills all the gaps.

The compact is lacking in drivers and adding a oho blade and pliers to my edc has been awesome.
Skelly is the "dirty" blade, SAK for food and such.

I went cx when I realised this was such a perfect dovetail to my SAKs, who cares about the cost.

That's the kind of attitude we like around here :tu:  Especially when it's somebody else's :D

The Skele must be tried first if you are considering one. Some people love it, but others (like me) despise it. The ergonomics are horrible IMO. The Fuse is great and so is the Kick. It's just a matter of choosing between a pocket clip and the extra tools

A Skelly in the pocket is worth more than 100x Super Tools, Waves, Charges, in the car or at home.

Have you thought about a freestyle?

I did look into those rather briefly but all I could find was a combo edge, which I hate!  They are pretty basic with just the plier's and blade though, which I did kinda like!  Then I moved up to the Skeletool as a possibility!  :)

You could try to find a Freestyle CX (http://www.leatherman.com/13.html) somewhere.

Personally, I love the Freestyle / Explorer combination... I actually like the combo blade as an alternative to the SAK plain edge though, and I don't really need the bit driver. There is a fair difference between the Skeletool and the Freestyle in pocket, just because of the length difference.

Sent from my mobile.

May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

Thanks for the pics!  It does seem kinda awkward!

I was just researching blade sizes and the Fuse has a 3 inch blade where as the Kick and Skeletool have a 2.6 inch blade but I would give a plus to the Skeletool for OHO and 154 steel.

I might have to just go with the Fuse so I can get alittle longer blade length without hardly any size difference from the Kick.  Then again, the Kick has a pocket clip and wish the Fuse had one but not a deal breaker.

Don't forget the kick is non-locking. Not sure if that helps or hurts.

  • You're amongst friends.
My answer is subject to change any given day since the FUSE and Skeletool are both favorites of mine but today I would lean towards the Skeletool. I've always found the removable bits to be ideal for most jobs. Now if wire cutting is a task however, you might prefer the pliers of the FUSE.

... but only 0.1 of a Wave in the pocket .... at best  >:D

+1 exactly the same as my edc. Thinking of switching to CX if I can find a good deal...

The idea of stand alone pliers isn't a bad idea. I'm thinking about doing that with an SAK or a Crater. I had a Skeletool while it looked good on paper and the blade was awesome, i didn't care for the drivers or the pliers digging into my palms.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I guess I am thinking about it cause I just want to cover my bases or "what ifs" without a EDC load in my pockets.  I am considering the Skeletool cause it does have a minimal amount of tools but the tools it has will compliment my Vic Ranger or if I decide to leave the Ranger home, it will also compliment the Vic Rambler on my keys.  That is probably all I would need, the Rambler and Skeletool, especially in the summer/spring when shorts are worn daily.

Price wise, I might just go with the Kick or Fuse cause they are dirt cheap but still held the tools needed (mainly plier's but was eyeballing the OHO blade as a bonus) to compliment the sak(s) I carry and it is hard to argue with that instead of diving into a $55+ Skeletool CX and then not liking it or wanting to change the setup! :)

What to do, what to do?? LOL

Thanks for the comments everyone and please keep them coming so I can turn this into a Skeletool vs Fuse vs Kick arguement in my head!  :salute:

I reckon the Ranger matched with the Fuse looks like a pretty good combo with most bases covered.

I had a Skeletool CX and while it was light weight and looks cool I found that it just wasn't enough MT for me!

The Ranger has alot of tools.  Great setup and I agree that with a plier's based MT it should cover it!
