begleri or worry beads
on: December 26, 2014, 02:27:26 PM
These seem to be (at least on Fb groups) the new old edc item. Does anyone on here carry or sling them? I've made a few pairs for people but I personally am not into them.

I prefer a komboloi. Why use two beads when you can use 17 or 21 or more?

Ayyy! My fidget thread!

I am looking to make a Begleri but really want a set of ScoopyLoop beads for it. And they don't necissarily mass produce them so it's all a waiting game

How fast are you shrinking, how large where you to begin with...
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

With all those OCD people here, I don't wonder there is "anal" way of thinking, in the Freudian sence. Pious people would possibly see it as a rosario (which it isn't), but one sees what one wants to see.
For those that would like to know more

It seems that it is a trend for the rest of the world now http://edcforums.com/threads/begleri-a-fun-and-simple-pocket-sized-skill-toy.86931/

Begleri is a short form of komboloi, open ended and with less beads, 2-8 usually (even in contrast with komboloi's odd number).
Younger people prefer the begleri in Greece also, simple begleria are shold in the tobacco kiosks, made from steel. But the better ones use amber and other precious materials.
It is easy to make your own and use any kind of bead. For me the best beads are antique amber, (other kinds of amber, faturan, mastic and sudurus are nice also), followed by red coral root and obsidian. Silver also and haematite also. Quartz beads are nice but tend to break easily, Corneole is better than aventurine. I prefer the beads to be similar (without silver beads between them), globular and tuft only for the big specimens.

You read way too deep into it. While many have wandering and inquisitive minds and drew some parallels, none of us mentioned neither sex nor anal connotations, you were the first to mention it.

Loosen up, mate.  8)

Could you clarify something for me?
While a komboskini or rosario is used for prayer, and  Ranger beads are used for counting, this variant has no other use than the fiddle factor.
Did I get this right or did I miss something?

Yes, that's the charm of it, it serves no other purpose than enjoyment.
Orthodox monks used the komboskini with fixed knots for prayers. Ottomans used the Desbich and Catholics the Rosario. So when Greek citizens took the beaded form in their hands it didn't have a religious significance because the religious form was already there (the komboskini) and they wouldn't give religious significance in an artidact they took from Muslims or Roman Catholics given the religious tensions of the time. Thus it was free to be used just for relaxation, a familiar image in coffee shops and promenades. Almost exclusively used by men and never during official situations.

My users

The first (right one, the image is upside down) comes from my grandfather. It had 21 beads, those are the ones that survived.
The obsidian is current EDC, the coral my former and the silver and carneole from my youth. I played with the others for some time and a couple of destroyed ones. I would use the hematite if it had bigger beads, because I like them heavy.

I've just ordered 10 stainless steel beads and I'm going to make one for myself and maybe my son who seems to be as much of a compulsive fiddler as I am!

Sent from the astropathic choir.

Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!
