Which multi tool do I need?
on: May 09, 2016, 04:50:09 PM
So I got a job with Lowe's driving a truck.

Mostly I drop off lumber and other building materials for contractors but when it is slow I help out with appliance deliveries in the box truck.

The tools we are given to install are junk
when they were new and even worse now.

What I am looking for is a multi that can use 1/4 in drive sockets. There are a ton of little bolts we use for power cords and such.

Maybe some kind of adaptor so I could use sockets on one of my Leatherman tool bit adaptors or extensions or the Vic bit wrench thing since I am still looking for an excuse to buy a Spirit.

Congrats on the job.

Your Surge is capable in using 1/4 sockets.  You will have to use the bit extender and it won't drive with incredible torque.

The Crunch has a place in the handle that will accept 1/4" drive.

The PPP Deluxe also has a 1/4" drive.

You can buy the Vic plus set, either the L wrench or ratchet would be bomb proof.

Congrats on your new job

Thanks.

Might be temporary as I will probably go back to Afghanistan this summer as a security contractor.

Lowe's is way safer but the money is way better.

Actually, this came up on another thread a while back: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,64887.0.html

One good bit of advice from there (or so I thought, anyway) was to have proper tools, not just a multi.  You're being paid to install someone's property.  I wouldn't be happy if you started mucking about with my brand new washing machine with a pair of folding pliers.

Get yourself a small impact driver, ratchet driver, long length bits and some nut setters.

...I am still looking for an excuse to buy a Spirit.

A Spirit plus ratchet set is capable and customizeable (1/4" sockets are handy). I carry that kit a lot in my tool bag, and with a few other things are actually available at Lowe's. In my case a small Crescent wrench, wire cutters, and Channellocks among other things, but that combo has been fairly unstoppable so far.

Congrats Harley, you now must get a Spirit!  ;)

I am still in for a couple more months but using up all my saved vacation days. Not a whole lot of time to take leave while in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Maybe I am slow but I do not understand how to use sockets on the female end of a LM extender?

You can get a little 1/4 drive adapter that fits in there

Exactly - these have a 1/4" hex male on one end and a 1/4" square male on the other end (and you can also get them with a 3/8" square male or a 1/2" square male end as well).

Do not want to take away an excuse to pickup a Spirit, yet a very practical tool I have at least 4 of in my work truck and fits well in back pocket is a 6n1 screw driver from Husky (p/n 628-375).  I find it at HomeDepot for under $6.   It has two Phillips PH1 & PH2 tips, two flat blades and two nut drivers that most standard hex heads used by assembly lines
