What is your perfect 5-SAK collection?
on: July 09, 2015, 03:48:38 PM
Similar to the 'perfect 3-SAK collection thread'

Rules:

a) One modded model is allowed.
b) One discontinued model is allowed. (please say what tools it has)
c) The other three have to be current production
d) Spirits and anything that could be construed as a MT from Victorinox are allowed

It'll be interesting to see if the popularity of certain models changes since the 3 SAK one.

This will also ease the anxiety of the fellows who couldn't choose between two models their 3rd one in the previous thread.

The most popular models are in the poll. If your favorites aren't in the poll, please type them in a reply.

My two that aren't in the most popular category are:

  • One-hand Trekker NS
  • Workchamp
I'll tally the results (for models not specifically in the poll) after a week or so, so get your vote in!

Alpinist (OHO rescue blade, metal-file, wood-saw, main-blade, awl)
Pioneer/Soldier '61 (don't care which one, for me, they are the same)
CyberTool 29
Spirit RT
Alox Classic
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

There are only 1,5 of my 5 top favorites on the list.

1. Victorinox Swisschamp XLT
2. Victorinox Minichamp
3. Wenger Ranger Hunter 57 (you can use the new Victorinox replacement if you wish, otherwise discontinued)
4. Victorinox Spirit S Plus
5. Victorinox Alox with blade, combo and scissors (Mod)

I use these. 1 is in my drawer by  the bed, 2 on my keyring, 3 when outdoors (rare indeed), 4 and 5 in my EDC Skinth.

Ok, so let's start off with building a shortlist working from the poll options:

Eliminations:

Swisschamp and minichamp have tools I have no use for and therefore excess weight/bulk (pliers and fishscaler, emergency blade, spatula, cotton wool remover, ruler)

New Soldier is 108mm and I don't like any of that line particularly

Old Soldier, Pioneer, Farmer, all alox with their limited tool set and weird feel scales, so they're out

Tinker has backspring Phillips, so that's off the shortlist

Spartan doesn't have scissors, and neither does the CT 29

Additional candidates:
Ranger 14 (for gardning)
Rangergrip 90 (for outdoor pursuits)
Traveller (as alternative to Climber)

I'm going to say my three additional candidates stay, plus the Manager. This leaves the two larger Cybertools, the Compact, the Classic and the Explorer to choose from. The classic is not needed due to having the Manager, the Explorer's mag glass isn't as good as a fresnel lens in the wallet or as the True Utility Eyeglass, and while the compact is nice, the combo tools has it's limitations. As such, I'll play the Mod card for my final choice, and say CT41 without pliers.

Now, before I vote, do you want me to tick the Climber box for the Traveller, or are you considering that a different SAK?

I guess the Traveller could be grouped with the Climber, so go ahead and vote Climber.

My modded one is still the Classic with the tool orientation reversed. Blade and nail file stick out,  scissors point toward the keyring.
Discontinued, I've always wanted a Scientist
After that, a Cadet, Rucksack , and a Spirit, just for kicks.

58mm Vic MiniChamp
85mm Vic/Wenger S557
91mm Vic Swisschamp XLT
111mm Vic One Handed Trekker OHO NS
115mm Vic SwissTool RS

Models on the edges include the Rambler (the 58mm essentials), Explorer (great but loses to s557), Farmer (alox scales rock but I prefer scale and back tools) and Rangergrip 78 (same great tool set as trekker but not as pocket friendly).

Not sure how many you can have on you at once before appearing "strange" socially... :/

The voting options sound like a challenge! :)

The list was actually made from the most popular models from the previous poll.

Executive is one of my favorites, even if it isn't on the list. I think it has the smallest blade of any product SAK, then a "medium blade", which no other one has.

Are they still made with screwed scissors?

I'd like to see an "Executivechamp" model with more tools. Maybe one layer thicker, with some tools that are slightly more rugged than we'd find on a 58mm SAK, but not as rugged as we'd find on a 84+mm one.

Only 3 of my choices appear in the list, I voted for those but here are all 5:

1. SwissChamp (pre-2005 with old style mag glass + staghorn scales being my personal favorite)
2. MiniChamp (in alox!)
3. Rescue Tool
4. Harvester
5. Electrician Plus

If there would be a 6th place I'd add:

6. Mauser

I personally get by just fine with less than 5.  Farmer, One Hand Trekker plain edge, and Tinker suit my needs just fine.

Tinker in the city, Farmer in the woods, and the Trekker as a belt knife when I need something one hand opening.

Smaug, your really need to make up your mind!  First 3, now 5...what is it?   ;)

  • As noted previously, Apprentice (84mm, mod) part of my daily EDC rotation
  • ditto, Golfer (84mm, out of production) part of my weekend EDC rotation
  • ditto, Champion (out of production) sentimental favorite from 1974
  • Rambler, part of my EDC rotation (though more a favorite when wearing suits)
  • Cadet, my primary daily EDC carry

Daily rotation EDC blade options not listed:
  • Small Tinker
  • Alox Bantam

Weekend rotation EDC blades not listed:
  • Yeoman (mod)
  • Alox Pioneer (new, getting used to 93mm)
  • Stayglow Compact (new, getting used to 91mm)

On the way; a 2-layer modded Explorer into Scientist (current project) and an updated 91mm Golfer w/Plus Scales

   Not much fits into yoru survey, but wanted to participate.

Just wanted to a) see how choices would change if there were 5 instead of 3, and b) satisfy the fellows who could not decide between the last two. ;)

Thanks for your in-depth reply and participation.
