I just stumbled upon a YouTube channel from a fellow Canadian called FortNine. I find his reviews frankly, some of the best motorcycle reviews I have seen...very professionally done, and I like the history he tends to imbue his videos with. Thought I would share.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNSMdQtn1SuFzCZjfK2C7dQ/videos

He is an interesting bloke. I enjoy his reviews too

Fortnine... his review of the SCR950 helped convince me I wanted one.

In retrospect... not a good purchase for me, but his review was pretty spot on.

Charles.

G'Day,

Our virus lock-down laws are starting to ease, and daily bike-trips can be had. We sadly had to cancel a 8 day trip through the bush fire affected areas due to this virus nonsense.

Me and some mates went for some day-rides. I took the R9T our for a good run to add the last few kms to get to the 40K mark. Our postie joined me on his Harley and we had a really good day out. The beauty of shift work and holidays are that I can ride during the week when there are fewer "weekend warriors" on the road trying to kill us. I have had the R9T for just under two years and it has been a bike that I really like. As a daily commuter it puts a smile on my face each time I turn the key. Later this year I will upgrade the suspension and then it will be a very good bike. The suspension out the box is basic with very little adjustment possibilities. Still a hoot to ride!!!

The ride yesterday was a good / big one. 625 km all up. The morning started nice and warm, but then the storm clouds started rolling in. Once we crossed the mountain we got some strong winds. I was blown a few times across the road. Riding like this is tiring especially on wet roads. Our last afternoon fuel stop it was a chilly 4 degrees C. I could not stand still, I was shaking so much. Being on the bike was warmer than standing in the wind. Damp gloves and a damp boot, but I was bone dry. I recently bought a new Klim Latitute suit that is really good.
It was also the first test on the GSA with the new Wilbers suspension and John Gemmi tune-up chip. The OEM suspension was 18 years old and getting a bit tired. I priced the Wilbers and the BMW OEM stuff, and the Wilbers was $40 cheaper, plus it gives so much more adjust-ability. A no-brainer to add the good stuff. The shock are built for my weight and riding style. I cannot believe the difference it has made. The bike is planted and steers exactly where I need it to go. When I had the boy-child on the back it was just as good. Aftermarket suspension is not cheap, but the confidence and comfort is fantastic. I also have the ability to service them every few years and change the set-up if my riding weight or style changes.
Then the chip... Well suffice to say the ponies now have a new urgency in them. Air/oil cooled bikes are usually set-up lean from factory to get them passed the emissions regulations. This often results in surging between 3K to 4K rpm. My GSA suffered from this badly. No matter what I tried in terms of balancing, booster plus and the 1200cc balanced injectors, there was always a bit of surging. It is most felt at lower speeds. Eventually I capitulated a bought a tune-up chip from a bloke John Gemmi in Greece. He speSmurfpillses in after-market chips for BMW's and each chip is configured for the air cleaner and exhaust system on one's bike. I keep my bike stock, except for the short pipe where the big end-can used to be. I still have the stock headers and cat on it. The bike is still adjusting to the new configuration. Yesterday was the first time I could put the bike through its paces. It accelerates much quicker and runs to the red line like a race horse. Coupled that with the new suspension, this feels like a totally new bike!!!
Tomorrow is another big ride before I go back to work. I will add some more pics!!!

Cheers, Pete

Absolutely happy, and I agree, an ill handling bike is down right dangerous.

Today's ride was another good one. Not as cold as Monday and completely dry. A tad over 500 kms for me. The suspension is now properly bedded in. We had lots of road works that put me back at home an hour later than planned. As frustrating as that was it is good to see them repairing the roads. There are some really bad ones still after the bush fires.

And now some pics. I will not get a chance for at least another two weeks before I can get out again. A couple of small scenic trips to work maybe...

Cheers, Pete

Here, we have holes inside of holes. The winter beats up the pavement badly. I will admit, the city patch crew have been very busy of late and things are improving.

Installed my new battery and the motorbike started very easily. I let it idle for a while to get all the fluids moving a bit. I even gave it a good wash as I didn't clean it for winter storage.

Those are horrible and become "invisible" when filled with water. Here in Oz we can get some compensation from the roads departments if they have not fixed it and we damage a car rime or bike. The problem though is proving non pre-existing damage...

Is the weather good enough to ride yet?

We can only get compensation if
they knew that there was a pothole

Well, here’s a pic of it when I first got it, as you can see things were a little diff,, I’ve rotated the seat to make the dual steering the front rather then the back, and added a 26” multi gear wheel for the drive rather then that single speed 20” wheel that was in front. I really wanted that spring but something happened last night after the older kid took it for a test ride, after both me and the other kid and had no problem, so I think I’m going to take that out and shorten the whole setup by like 9” maybe making the steering a little better and everything a little more tight, guess just no suspension,,

Short trip today to deliver a seat to someone who will convert it for more comfort on longer trips. This church is a favourite local photo opportunity.

That looks nice DT. Are you getting a touring seat made up? The church looks very nice.

Hey JR,

When I saw that second pic I thought you were all in reverse!!! :D I may not be the sharpest tool, how will the drive train work with the gears in the back? Are you doing a multi-chain setup?

Being orange some KTM decals will look nice on it.

Pics or it won't have happened

And it all happened.

It was a really good ride today. We started early in lots of fog. There were times that visibility was down to 50m. And then there are still cars that do not have lights on!!! IDIOTS. Our first stop was in St Albans next to the park. A quick stretch and a sip of water. That was followed by a 40 km dirt road. We have had quite a bit of rain in the last few days which made for some interesting times. The road has also been graded and fixed. With a clay base we had the bikes sideways more than once...  :o We stopped half way for some pictures and another drink.

After the dirt it was a quick blast up to Wollombi for a lovely breakfast. The trip back was twisties sharing the road with some young "storm troopers". These weekend warriors come out in droves on the sports bikes and designer leather suits doing some silly stuff and attracting lots of copper attention. I love the look on their faces when I round them up on the corners on a 17 year old "dirt bike" with nobbies. Priceless.

All in All a very good day. Next ride is on Tuesday, I'll post the pics and ride report during the week.

Enjoy the weekend, Pete

Nice pics Pete :like:

Yup - fog is something many drivers don't seem to take into account at all. I can't count the number of times I've been overtaken on the Autobahn by fast drivers who seem to rely on radar (even if the age of their cars would seem to exclude that gimmick  ;))

Ah yes, the seat. I've found out that the stock seat is too uncomfy for longer trips. So I've invested in a Comfort Gel seat (pictured above) which has gel inlays. Turns out that doesn't help. The seats are both a tad too narrow where I sit and create pressure points just where the bones are. I'm going to have the stock one widened a few centimetres on either side and move the forward seating position slightly back, as well as have about 1-2 cm of padding added on top. I think that should help spread the pressure and add some comfort.
Cheers!

Are you doing fancy stitching too? I'm interested in custom seats, although I can sit on the stock GSA seat all day long. The R9T is not that good, similar to your experience by the sounds of it. My seat stitching forms a ridge that becomes uncomfortable after a few hours. And being my daily ride, I spend at least two hours on it every day. I'll be interested to hear how you like yours.

Cheers, Pete
