Oilskin jacket?
on: October 18, 2015, 12:03:07 PM
I need a new jacket that can be used both in the woods and in the city.
I already have a H/H shell jacket, but its a bit thin and not very fire friendly. A spark from the fire will easily burn a hole in it.
So Im considering a oilskin short jacket, and I have found this one:
http://www.australiangear.com/australian-clothing/oil-skin-clothing/burke-and-wills-the-swan-hill-oil-skin-jacket.html
Do anyone here have any experience with this brand?

I'm pretty sure that in this case the term 'oilskin' is being used to mean the same thing as waxed cotton.  If I'm right then I have a bit of experience in this field. ;)  The two obvious brands to look at are Barbour and Drizabone, though other brands do exist. :D  In fact my current go-to jacket is by Hunter Outdoor: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hunter-Outdoor-Horseman-Ladies-Jacket/dp/B0035Q7UM2/ref=sr_1_1?s=clothing&ie=UTF8&qid=1445203675&sr=1-1&keywords=hunter+outdoor+wax

Waxed cotton should be heavy, robust, fire and tear resistant and mostly waterproof.  However it's won't be as breathable as your HH shell jacket, it isn't 100% waterproof and will need re-waxing every so often.  Once worn in though they take on a character all of their own that is hard to beat. :tu:

You could look at Ventile too: http://www.ventile.co.uk/.  It's a very tightly woven cotton cloth that doesn't need coatings to be waterproof.  Much softer and doesn't smell like waxed cotton, but it's quite pricey.  I've got a jacket from Howies: http://www.howies.co.uk/ventile-cotton-jackets - the Airman - and it's lovely.  Waterproof, soft, doesn't rustle like a crisp packet and is wearing in really nicely - I've had it two years.  Hilltrek make some nice jackets too: http://www.hilltrek.co.uk/index.html

I have been considering getting a Barbour lately, but I'm not taking chances with mail order. At those prices I want to try them on and look in a mirror, rather than have the hassle of mailing back. There is an outlet store of theirs about 25 miles from me, but it's a matter of finding time to go, as well as having the spare funds (though the outlet stores are usually cheaper)

I'd not really thought about it, but waxed cotton (or oilskin) really does seem to be synonymous with Australia and the UK in my head, does anywhere else have a tradition of making the stuff?

I've got a big riding duster made by Drizabone, a classic motorcycle jacket by Barbour and three other waxed jackets, one of which I got from Gap!  Some, like my wife, would call that one things like "nearly falling apart" and "too tatty to wear".  I call it "just about broken in". :D

Oil skin(cloth) was used heavily in the US and there are still some companies that still make it for tarps, packs and coats. Waxed cotton, not as much.

Its not used much here theese days, but in the old days it was used a lot by fishermen and farmers.
Now pretty much everyone use syntetic jackets.

I've just thought..... I already have a fleece lined jacket with cotton outer which I've had a few years now, and it's really comfy and warm but not waterproof. Can you wax any cotton jacket, or does it go wrong on some? Though it best to check before I wreck it  :P

If it is pure cotton, you should be able to. Just a head up, in warmer weather the wax will melt and get sticky. Oil cloth(skin) will not.

I've not tried this one myself, but I've had my eye on it for pretty much the same reason you mention: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001DKCWSO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1Q6V8LD7M02X2&coliid=I1N6EZZZUS32N6&psc=1

I have that.

I tried it on my manbag, using the soaking method as described. Didnt work very well. It might work better in the washing machine.
I ended up rubbing it full of nikwax for leather. It made it look very "waxed", but waterproofed it well.

I'll have to take a pic, the hats been in storage, so it was kinda crushed.. Not the brim, that's nice and flat, but the crow, it's kinda folded.. I'm thinking I can put some oil on it to clean it up and give it a little shape? Idk,,
JR
Here's an old one, the top left one, it's kinda twisted, and the sides kinda cave in..

Cause well it was flat..
