I have a theory that majority of us here will mostly be over-thought, over-analyzed and over-geared.

In reality, we never really need that amount of stuff/thinking/analysis, and we do it anyway, just because of the love and addiction to our tools.

Of course, myself included. :D

One of the members here, I can't remember his name right now (Monro ... and something ) used to have a 5 week repeating schedule to help him decide which tool to take with him every morning ...

How can you be right ? ;)

Anyway, I hear he's doing much better these days, he's almost back to normal they say ...  ok:

As for me, I have a couple of favorites from which I choose, but I always combine them with my trusty Swisschamp.  So I always carry my Swisschamp in my pocket, and in the sheath on my belt it's always one of these tools, Victorinox Spirit or Swisstool, Leatherman ST300, Rebar, Surge or OHT.

Hey, how ya doing buddy? :waving:

Yes, I'm doing much better now....actually, I'm about the same as you.  I stick to basically one SAK (my MechaRogue), and pair it with whatever MT I feel like carrying, or think will suit my needs for the day.  I do overthink these things though, but have improved over time as I've settled more into what I know I like.  Problem is I like a variety of MTs, so that choice can be tough.  For work though, my needs don't vary much, so any MT will do for the most part.  Saturdays are when it can vary depending one what I think I may end up dealing with.  My MechaRogue remains a constant EDC though :tu:  I just need to really think and narrow down my MTs, although I do tend to stick to a select few at this point.

However Eric, I could add one more to my options, if you get my drift buddy ok:  ;)

I have no idea what you're talking about ...

very true.

I usually carry a SwissChamp or something similar,  plus a Plier Based MT (usually a Wave or Charge)

if I decide to carry a smaller SAK that is missing a file and a saw,  I think "the MT has those" and I should be good  (but add the SwissChamp to the bag just in case)

if I decide to carry the Kick or Skeletool as my MT, I know that the SwissChamp has me covered, so I think "I should be good to go" (and I throw the Wave/Charge into my bag)

if I decide to go real lite like a Skeletool and tinker,  I make sure my bag has a Wave/Charge and a SwissChamp (or other large SAK)

there have been days where I have carried 2 SAKs and 2 MTs and felt amazing all day  :dd:

I am seriously thinking about making a custom SAK that is the SwissChamp, minus the knife layer and minus the opener layer.  then this could be my "companion SAK" to have all the tools I am missing if I decided to carry a smaller SAK.      I am serious about this

yeah,  been kicking that idea around for a long time.  problem is every time I go to buy a donor SAK, I decide against it because I would feel bad ripping it apart.

my other mod I want is a SwissChamp plus cybertool layer  (XLT has this, but has the spatula and the pruner blade and electricians blade).  my problem is finding a CyberTool at a price I would be willing to rip it apart.
If I can help, let me know

Didn't you get a CT29 not too long ago!  :)

I wouldn't mind a CT41 with a mag layer but like you, it is hard to find a donor to give up the mag layer on!  LOL

This topic has got me thinking about what I carry and why, and I've decided to stick with carrying just a small subset of my collection for a month or so to see how I get on.  Typically I'll have a knife, keychain tool and light in my pocket, and some extra hardware nearby or my bag.  Generally I need a blade, flat driver, poky thing, light, scissors and tweezers regularly and pliers, files, saws, etc less often.  So my new EDC will be Victorinox Spirit and Swisschamp in the bag and a Pioneer, Fenix LD09 and LM Style CS in my pocket.  Should do everything I need, though I might add a Victorinox bit driver  and some 1/4" bits to my bag too.

No overthinking. Keep it simple.

SAK + Light

If I need anything more I got tools at home and in the car.  I don't need to wear a Batman utility belt when I leave the house.

Lots of us have tools either near by or in our vehicles.   Putting that aside I like to have something on me to tackle most things I may encounter.  Light to me is a not an option, I have to have one or 3 on me at all times.  A dedicated knife while nice is not something I am carrying much at all these days.  I do pocket my opinel from time to time however not on a regular basis.

I like to have multiple drivers, scissors, file, saw, and medium duty pliers.  I use the blade of my MT more these days so again no real need for a dedicated blade.

In terms of bases covered in my comings and goings this handles what I typically run into.  Work carry is different as I have tools at my disposal yet I still like to have a "minimum" capability.

Its all about what each person feels comfortable with.  If you carry a Classic and button light awesome, if you carry a full blown bat belt still awesome.

Theres no right or wrong or better or whatever.  I tend to tinker and find projects around my house so having a certain carry on me is more about convenience.

Todays carry

Skeletool, Swisschamp, LD02

Projects so far, tighten knob on cabinet, set up my lansky ( pliers + driver ) for some blade sharpening, broke down some boxes for recycling.

Always a midnite manager on my keychain and a 91mm, 84mm Vic or a 85 mm Wenger in my pocket.
Weekends, yardwork or Hiking/camping require additional knives and sometimes a fixed blade.

The way to solve the dilemma is to get rid of all your extra gear.  Keep one multitool, one flashlight, etc.

What I find most interesting is why you all carry what you carry.  How you came to those particular tool sets or a singular item.  How many times did you have to reach for the tool box, how many times were unable to save the day based off what you had in your pockets?

Speaking for myself, I usually carry an Explorer Plus, Manager, Classic, or Exec, just because I've found out those have the tools I need most.

I've only not been able to save the day a handful of times, even with jut the little Classic.

Thinking what one MIGHT need instead, that's a recipe for heavy pockets.  ;)

I don't like to have too much stuff so as an EDC I have my mini mag LED AAA torch and usually pocket my Woodsman. I swap the knife for one of my other SAK's from time to time, but I only have 1 torch.

The Woodsman covers most of my day to day requirements and my Spirit covers the metal saw/file and pliers. The Spirit is kept in my office or rucksack.

I like to keep my Opi No.7 in my waiscoat pocket because it's an amazing little knife and I use this for food prep etc. I don't take it out with me because of the lock, and I have no need of it on top of my Woodsman.

With a Victorinox Craftsman in my left pocket  and Leatherman PST II in my watch/change pocket of my jeans I feel I'm pretty much well equipped for most of the stuff I tinker around with.  When I get the CyberTool 41 and retire my Craftsman, I'm sure I'll be even more well prepared!  Especially considering my Craftsman is a 1987-1990 model, and too old to have the hook or good modern metal file/saw.

When I'm doing farm work, I choose the Victorinox Soldier 2008 and a pair of lineman's pliers, since Leathermans do a poor job cutting the thick fencing wire used on the farm.

24/7 on me: EKA Swede 8 folding knife. (yep also in my pyjama pocket)
In my jacket pocket: Swisstool X, so it is always with me when i leave the house.
For in the woods: Fire kit (small metal canister that contained an biceclye tire repair kit) containing: cottonballs soaked in vaseline and a Light my fire 2.0 fire steel, Zippo, Swisstool X, Mora MG heavy duty, EKA Swede 8 and when it is dark Maglite 3d led flashlight.

I recently downsized from carrying a swisstool 24/7 to an folding knife.
