Urban EDC MT (Mid size) comparison
on: November 13, 2015, 11:37:09 PM
We all search for the perfect MT (That is why we are here in MTO), my most interests lays in finding the perfect Urban EDC MT (Mid size) consist of pliers, knife, Phillips driver, two sizes of flathead drivers, scissors & awl, and nothing more, weight no more than 6 oz.

What are the options?

PST II  would be my choice, I think it weights 5 oz. You can use the small flathead and/or can opener as an awl .

A SOG Paratool might work if you install scissors.

Rebar gets you there if you add scissors at a little over 6 oz..... 6.9 oz. from LM website

That weight is crucial. The only think that comes to mind is a Rebar with Scissors but it's still heavy. Or a PST but idk how much it weighs.

Do you want manafactured only? Or are you including mods?

So far I have PSTII, Juice S2, KickASS, Customized SOG P³.

I am going to post some photos later for comparison.

Squirt PS4 has the same tool set as well, but there is time that the tool is just too small.

Stock? None, as far as im aware.

If trying to go as compact as possible, Leatherman PST with PST II scissors swapped in for the file is probably the way to go.

My preference would be to make another of 50ft-trads Perfect Pocket Power Plier, which is a  Paladin PT510 with PST II parts.

I'd say your PPP is probably the most realistic method, as all the parts are relativly cheap, and easily available.

I suppose you could grind the can opener on a Deluxe Tinker into a small flathead, and the bottle opener into just a large flathead, and pretend the hook isn't there like I do...

KickASS gave up the can opener for an awl
PST II has file but no awl
P³ has an awl

All has ruler.

Good call, again the small driver and/or the can opener could be used as an awl   :tu:

Juice S2 or Leatherman Leap, both are light and small.

The 3 above are heavier

I don't know any weights

MP400 is a great urban-carry edc. I had mine with me at work for the last few days (I couldn't find my SP2). I had forgotten what pleasure it is to carry. Well equipped. Sturdy. But still light and small enough to disappear in a pocket.

Gerber needs to redesign with ouside access scissor and knife, and a pocket clip (broken record)

I certainly agree on the first part  :D It's an excellent urban choice, and I find it very pocketable. I really like my knifeless version though, and really don't mind the scissors being inboard. Undecided on the pocket clip  A pocket clip on a tool is nice, but if it were to spoil the ergos on a MP400, I'd rather go without  :)

I kept a lot of different urban options, and recently sold my XE6. Having every implement under the sun on a tool can make it less appealing to carry and use for some people  :) I'd rather carry a Climber and KF4, or Original Outdoorsman and Sideclip, or..... if I decide I do want everything including a diamond file.... a Wave..... and a SAK  ;)

For me the Wave was probably the biggest reason to not keep the XE6. I didn't see why I should keep both, and the Wave won. For the record, the new owner of my XE6 appears to think the same way, and is planning on letting it go at the end of the month.

I can see why some people like it, and can also see why others do not. I found it too small to be big and too big to be small. As such it falls into a similar void to the 74mm SAK line, which also is too large for keys and too small for the pocket (for me)

I think either the PST II or the Pulse beat all other mentioned. PST has superior scissors and combo blade and the the Pulse locking tools, both have great diamond files as a bonus. Like I said before the small screwdriver easily would work in conjunction with the can opener as an awl for most things. With the lanyard ring you can dangle from your belt and carry either front or back pocket. Both are 6oz or under and no mods necessary.

If that was the choice I'd have to go with Pulse.  I believe they rolled the handles on those if memory serves....?  The PST's fit the pocket nice, but those handles ruin the appeal of having a pliers that I rarely need outside of work.

Yes, I forgot to mention the rolled edges as a plus on the Pulse .

I found it too small to be big and too big to be small.
Agree, I had a XE6 and I felt the same.

Hmmm...isn't that why it's considered a midsized MT???    :drink:

Waves, Rebars, Sidekicks, Wingmen, MP600s, Stratas...are all much heavier and more full-sized.  The Juice line really are lighter-weight and considered more of a midsized MT, just as the Squirts, Micras, etc., are considered small or lightweight.

Am I wrong or missing something?

I think that's one context.  But if you start with Super Tool, Surge, Swisstool, etc. as full-sized, then the 4-in lineup(including Wave, Rebar, PST) becomes mid-sized.

Just recently, I put this one together which fits the bill.

5.2 oz, with a clip.  As far as tool set, it's a PST II minus file and can opener.
