How do you wash your rice?

Just wondering how everyone washes their rice before cooking. Regular bowl, rice washing bowl, colander, ect...

Also, what is your favorite rice to cook?

Just in the bowl of the rice cooker, rinse 3 times. Jasmine is my favourite but I also make sushi and glutinous rice as well.  :tu:

You need some starch or you cant eat it with chopsticks  :salute:

We just wash it in a regular bowl/plate/whatever, like... just rinse it a couple of times.

I didn't even know there were TYPES of rice :D :D :D

In a colander with plenty of fresh water running through, no special number of times to rinse or anything. I just continue till the water seems more or less free of starch. My favourite is basmati, but I usually eat jasmine or whatever long-grain rice I can find in the store. I really like brown rice as well. Brown rice feels like a staple food, basmati something you eat Sundays. :)

I love Basmati, but have trouble finding it around here. I normally stick to Jasmine myself.

Basmati every time, I rinse it using a fine-mesh colander (so the grains don't wash through). I've tried numerous cooking methods for rice but I always go back to a simple food steamer, however, I read an article somewhere just recently about how rice should be cooked in water that is always being washed through because otherwise it just concentrates the arsenic and other nasty stuff that is found in rice grains.

Yum rice.  I like all kinds and all mentioned.  I rinse mine a few times in the container I cook it in.  I typically use a rice cooker for white rice, easy peasy.  I do have to say that I'm not eating rice much anymore tho.  Kinda been cutting my carb intake and eating more plant based diet.

Rarely wash it, like basmati or parboiled.

Same here.  I guess its because we have a full-time rice washer on staff at the Powernoodle Compound.

Not really.  This is the first I've heard of anyone washing rice.

Trivia:  since a young age, one of my favorite concoctions has been a mixture of white rice, butter, canned corn and Worchestershire.  Its something I think I made up, but its quite tasty.

By washing it, it will stick less and get a nicer texture. Also, there may be debris you really don't want to eat included in the rice as an extra treat.  :)

I didn't hear about washing rice till I was a student.

[...] I read an article somewhere just recently about how rice should be cooked in water that is always being washed through because otherwise it just concentrates the arsenic and other nasty stuff that is found in rice grains.

Souńds like it would be hard getting nice, "fluffy" rice that way. I think you'd get somethink like those horrid ways of boiling rice like it was pasta (using too much water, pouring away what hasn't been absorbed), which in my opinion is only fit for human consumption in emergencies...

I read about the arsen levels too, and of course brown rice, which I really like, is the worst. For now, I'll simply stick to my basic rule of trying to eat lots of different food to keep the exposure to any single problem within tolerable limits. I think arsen in rice probably isn't my biggest avoidable risk for my health anyway.  ;)

I don't wash rice, I just boil it. The type depends on what I'm cooking. If it's something served with rice, it'll be some long grain white, but I'll use brown if the rice is mixed in as part of the dish like a paella, unless of course it's a risotto when it will be aborio

By washing it, it will stick less and get a nicer texture.

I studied Tae Kwon Do many moons ago [<< that was almost a Sun Myung Moon pun], and the Korean family who taught it preferred super sticky rice.  It made the rice clumpy, and thus easier to pick up with chop sticks.

I absolutely love rice and whether minute rice or slow cooking I do not wash mine.

Maybe you can share some pics of your rice once it's cooked - that'd be awesome   :tu:

How wrong?! Everything is ruined forever!  :dwts:

 :D

I have heard rumours about tastes differing, but I think that can't be right, right?  I wash the rice, bring a measured amount of water in a pot to a boil, add the rice, and let it simmer with a lid on till all the water is absorbed. I let it rest with  the lid on for some minutes after removing the pot from the heat. Also, I never stir the rice after I have put the lid on the first time. An added benefit of washing the rice when doing it this way is less chance of rice sticking to the put.

Some people let the rice soak in cold water for a while after washing, before cooking. I guess what works best differs with types of rice, but rice isn't really a part of the diet I grew up with, so I don't know too much about the dos and don'ts.

That makes sense. After discussing with Tamil classmate back in university, we figured the way I have learnt cooking rice probably ultimately was heavily influenced by Indian cuisine, not one where chop sticks are used.

My rice cooking techniques came from the Filipino culture.  Calrose rice was mostly used and typically cooked in a rice cooker.  The thing I didn't understand early on was how my Filipino friends measured the rice to water after washing it.

Anyone see how Filipinos measure the rice to water?  Pretty neat and possibly done in other cultures tho I'm not aware.
