Poll: SAKs With Or Without Scissors
on: January 04, 2016, 06:31:48 PM
Scissors are one of the most popular tools on a Swiss Army Knife, but there are those of us that don't want/use them.  What percentage of MTO poll voters prefer them with compared to without?  This is a binary issue.  No room for the wishy washy.

Enquiring minds want to know!

The one tool I use the most by far
Rest is not idleness,
and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day,
listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time

I really like scissors, but I've found that I don't REALLY need them so I'll vote without.

If I'm carrying only a SAK,then there will always a pair of scissors.

However,I seldom carry only a SAK!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

You're either with us ... or against us (or are unfortunate to prefer 84mm and 93mm models and haven't located a retired model or custom mod.)

I, for one, like a variety of sizes, but prefer all versions without scissors.  Never use them and would prefer to be without the added thickness.

I'm glad I'm not the only one in the Without camp, but it is a little quiet over here!

If you need scissors, you aren't getting your knife sharp enough.

Now that is a different argument all together. My main blade will usually do anything my scissors would. Perhaps not as easy, but it works. Corkscrew on the other hand is a little harder to make do if you need one. Of course I've used my saw as a makeshift corkscrew and no cork wound up in the wine either.

If they happen to have a pair of scissors, ok. If not, no problem. I tend to go with with tools without them. A good blade can do most of a pair of scissors can do. About the only time I do use them is fingernails or a rare wire and I can use my knife for those. YMMV.

As I have said several times before, I consider a SAK without scissors to be incomplete

The SAKs I carry the most don't have scissors so they get paired up with a MT that does.

If I choose to carry a MT without scissors then I'll change to a SAK that does have them.

One of my favourite tools - 6th by a quick calculation. My most used edc is missing it so when traveling it is always paired with one that does have it. When a version of the trekker is made with it instead of the saw, I'm there!

The second most-used tool on my SAK (after the blade). All of my carry knives have scissors - Traveler, Pocket Tool Chest, Huntsman, Super Tinker.

This. Knife belongs to the folder. Pliers to the sheathed multi.

Of course the boy likes the magnifying glass the best.

I have a problem, I like Vic 58 mm scissor a lot, and 74 mm Vic and 65 mm Wenger too but less...
I prefer them to bigger sizes...

P.S:: Yes, I know, I am leading a campaign for 84 mm scissors...

Sometimes, I think I can do without them, but I can't.  It seems I only need a certain to on an SAK when I'm carrying a pocketknife or a thinner or larger SAK that does not have that tool. To prevent this, I've started carrying a Swiss Card in my wallet, as I often carry models that do not have scissors or scale tools (all of these military issue Victorinox models, of course)

When I was a kid, I bought the Fieldmaster model and have carried it for over 10 years.  It has what I need and nothing more: Blades, saw, scissors, the full openers layers (and their respective drivers), backside Phillips, awl, and multipurpose hook (which I recently found was great for carrying square hay bales).  I like the metal file, so I'm planning on upgrading to a Ranger, getting a used Master Craftsman, or getting a used Ranger modified to a Master Craftsman (so I can have the new file).  It adds only stuff I'll use.  Vic pliers are too small for building fences and torquing nuts and bolts on equipment.  They also can't cut hard wire.

Speaking from experience, scissors always because the last thing I want to use on an already scared child with hovering parents and a string wrapped too tightly around their wrist is a super-sharp blade that said parents have taught them to be terrified of.

Scissors...Yes!    :SAKnight:

I know that many carry multiple SAKs, so that the keychain version covers their scissor needs and/or their T&T needs...which is fine.  For me, I like to see if I can get by just carrying one...so Golfers and Compact versions cover my needs.  I haven't finished my Cadet mod (adding SCISSORS!), so the Cadets haven't been part of my EDC rotation for the last half-year. Next will be the Pioneer...assuming we don't see a Pioneer version with scissors until late in 2016.

If I have to carry a backup MT, it's going to be a plier-based, belt-carried tool, that takes care of pliers and a saw...not something that just duplicates my SAK.

SAKs rule!   :SAKnight:

I'm voting "with scissors".   :climber:

I mean I can sharpen the blade of my SAK to the best of my abilities but it still won't beat scissors in trimming nose hair  :ahhh .

On a different note, I haven't tried cutting gauze with a knife yet versus using scissors.  Cutting Urgotol (http://www.urgo.co.uk/67-urgotul) for wounds is also much better with scissors.  I believe if you're spending most of your time in an urban setting then scissors would be a good option.
