This is the commission repair that some of the eagle eyed spotted in the original "box full" pix.
It has me scratching my head over how to get the best result.
I'll be trying to come up with some way of retaining the MOP if at all possible, I have some oyster shells and will be experimenting with cutting a patch piece and also finely grinding some MOP from the shells and mixing with resin to make a MOP putty.

Next option is to cut the damaged areas back and make bolsters. Of course the ideal material for this would be nickel silver to match the liners but I don't have any. Spent a long time googling and the only thing I can find locally is wire for jewellery or full 1200mmx2400mm sheets.
From the USA, a $21 1/4 x 3/4 x 12" bar comes up with a $52 postage charge, That works out at over $AUS 100.00 to land a piece of bar here.  :ahhh
Other metals that I do have on hand are Brass (probably too yellow), Stainless, Aluminium (English English spelling, before you "correct" me) and I may have some titanium that would be thick enough.
Other things that spring to mind are making scales and inlaying a section of MOP salvaged from the original scales or going straight to some suitably spectacular timber.

(Image removed from quote.)

Its a tricky one .... but I am sure what ever you do will be great ... I like the sound of the MOP inlay or the spectacular timber or both :).... you could use the rest on some of the other knives :)

The rebuilt Small Climber.  It contains the best parts from the three donor knives but seeing that all three are of the same era with Victoria tang stamp I have no qualms with still labelling this knife "Genuine".

I have a 2nd set of 84mm scissors but no backspring. Perhaps I should look at cutting down a 91 spring to fit. If I do that, the next best of everything would build up to another small climber that would make a nice little user.

Working up some burl timber to use as scale material.
Coat in superglue, sand smooth... repeat ad nauseam until glassy smooth.

I'm planning to make a piece from some of the MOP to be used as an inlay. not sure of shape yet, maybe a shield.

Proof of concept assembly of some "leftovers".

Most of knife was from a 55 Elsener Schwyz Soldier but the blade was snapped off about 1cm from the tang. Awl from this knife was used to repair the 62 Wengerinox.

Awl used in this build is from a M1908 pattern Wengerinox which is a little bulky in the tang but that will be addressed when disassembled before final build. Spacer for Awl from another donor m1908.

Blade was originally from a Pioneer Settler that I canab'd to build the Aloxplorer.
It's a little bit shorter than originally but fits in here nicely.
Incidentally, the m1951 and m1961 blades have the same tang shape.

So, a little bit of fettling to be done but this will make a nice little user so I don't risk damaging ot losing the 62 Wengerinox.

I decided to keep the original blade in the old farmer's knife. it might be a little shorter than it was from new, but none of the alternatives felt right.
I have gone with brass for the new bolsters and pins which match the liners and contrast nicely with the original horn scales.
The pad of the backspring under the blade tang is quite badly worn so the knife has very low snap. This also has a lesser effect on the snap of the sacking needle. The saw on the other hand snaps like a new knife.
This doesn't really concern me as it's a dignified retirement that awaits this elderly agriculturist.

Slowly slowly catchy monkey.

Getting wood scales thin and then inletting MOP shields... painfully delicate work with scalpel under a microscope.

So this took far more hours (and months) than I was expecting. but I finally got off my smurf long enough to finish it. Now I just have to drag myself down to the post office.

Hmm, that sounds a little whiny... I'm not complaining about the time spent working on this piece, I've enjoyed it very much. Even got to work with some new techniques and materials.
I'm scolding myself for taking so long to get it done ::)

I had to put myself on a restriction from doing any of my own modding until this one was complete.

Is the line across the scales on the left a trick of the light or just a surface mark? I couldn't see it in the finished product, which is lovely.
