Older SOS kit, what's included?
on: August 20, 2016, 08:11:59 PM
Bought an older Champ with SOS kit on eBay.  Do all of the SOS kits include a sewing kit and twine?  Mine didn't come with a sewing kit or twine, and I'm not sure where those items would fit at in the pouch.  Mine came with matches, compass/ruler, sharpener, pencil, band aids, and paper items.

I got mine circa 1994 and it did have the small sewing kit and the cord. Other things I remember beside the ones you mentioned were a mirror, whistle, comb, fishing kit, and a flashlight

There were 2 kits.  One was a dual pouch and one a single.  I forget what each is called.  I had both and I don't recall the single sheath having the sewing kit and twine.  Both had a mechanical pencil, knife sharpening stone,  safety pins, ruler/mag glass/compass, AAA Maglite and other items.  You can get replacement items from the bay of fleas.

My 35 years old Champion, along with what's left of my SOS kit. As I recall, the kit included all items mentioned above, except the whistle. The comb lost its teeth, the sharpening stone turned to dust, the other items have been lost in time...

It is. Probably because I don't use it.

I've still got the mirror and the sharpening stone in my mid-80s pouch. Also the compass.
Alas the knife itself has gone AWOL.

They are neat kits.  I was obsessed to get both and luckily both were pretty complete and in great condition.  I kept the single pouch and moved the other on.  I actually use the one I kept for my hike SAK.  I've added a few items like a small ferro rod and qtips smeared with vaseline.

The Survial kit I got had a pristine Swisschamp in it along with a perfectly new Maglite solitaire.

I made my "Urban Survival" kit, in a Skinth Shield (but, initialy, in the small SOS kit leather seath), following the original contents paradigm. I keep the Solitaire, the compass (more useful for me the spirit level, ruler and thermometer), a sewing kit, safety pins, bandaids etc. I skipped the whistle, because it doesn't make sense in the city, the fishing kit, because I buy fish if I want to and the comb, because I have no much hair left anymore. A Spirit replaced the SAK.
I was drooling the kits in a US GI catalog (my cousin served US Cavarly in West Germany) in late '80s, but they both were very expensive for me then. I bought my first Swisschamp (a Champion of today) for ~$100 from the American base of Glyfada, through my cousin.

The kits.

I posted stock pictures from reference. I have my SOS kit original contents, and a Survival Kit OD pouch, but I changed the setup, removing some Victorinox items and adding some disposables. I also used the XLT in place of the original Swisschamp. I carried it and later most of these items found a new place in my Skinths.

Here, a nice way to present it, from a store in Korea (the pic isn't mine, bren10man took it). And my customed kit.

There is also a Ducks Unlimited SOS kit version, built around a Craftsman.

Heres my single sheath.  Its been a great companion when outdoors.  It has suffered some internal damage but nothing terrible.  The side flaps have pocket that holds the safety pins one side and something else on the otters.  Those both wore out so duct tape was the fix.  I keep q-tips with vaseline in one and safety pins in the other.  I kept the sharpener and pencil as both come in handy.  I also kept the mirror in the main flap inner pocket.  On the other flap I added a ferro rod.

I got lucky on fleabay and got both styles with Swisschamps.  The dual sheath I got was in darn near new condition.  I think only the matches were missing.  The single sheath shown in my pics came with an older Swisschamp but a few items were missing and the compass was broke.  I have a Suunto so it wasn't gonna be used anyhow.

If you already have a SAK you like then just get the sheath.  They also sell all the contents separately or fill as you desire.

Just a bunch of stuff I added to my SOS regular (small) SOS unit .
..

A couple of interesting items - a lock picking set, the double ended unit and the tension wrench next to it and a broken key extractor, the thing next to that. A emery board for those nasty chipped fingernails which catch on everything - a couple or buttons, never can find one which gets away - steel sharpener, rather than the stone, that always crumbles, the Solitaire fits where the stone was - comb, whistle, bought in addition to what I already had in the big kit, and a couple of alcohol pads for wound clean up where ever.- just a few Mc Gruber specials - you never know what may happen while out someplace.

Of course I only carry this on weekend when I am not working, always mice to have your trade tools with you!

I like your setup Aerojet. I came across this forum looking for ideas for my newly acquired Swisschamp SOS. I’d like to add some more items  to mine as well. Any chance you could post some pics of how the case looks with all the additions you added to it?

Welcome.

This thread is 4 1/2 years old.

You want to start a new thread and pose that question to all members,as others have added items to their kits, including a different SAK.
