Missed posting yesterday,so here's day 13:

Needed to cut the strings and dog hair off of the vacuum roller... Bottom plate screws came out nicely with the pioneers screwdriver/can opener.

Day 10:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)

The Swisscard, occupying a thin single layer in my wallet, came through today when attempting to open Blu-rays packaged in cellophane, which can be a PITA to unwrap. Many European releases have a pull strip, but more often than not the end of it cannot be accessed with a fingernail, and if it is, it pulls releases from the wrapper and pulls out without opening it:

Using the blade, the easiest place to get started with a slit is where one would open the clamshell as there's a space under the cellophane . . .

Then I use scissors to slice across the front  . . .

That's enough to tear it completely off by hand. Now it's finally open and I can watch the movie!  :woohoo:

Turns out the other one was wrapped in a polypropylene that could be ripped open by hand. However, just as I was done with this the mail arrived and one item was a small package, so while I had the Swisscard out . . .

Inside were two BNIB 65mm Wenger Esquire, with the vinyl slip cases. I'm beginning to like these more than the 58mm Classic SD as they're slightly larger, but not nearly the size of the 74mm Vics. Scissors and nail file are larger. Vic made a Delemont Executive 81 for a while, which was identical, except with a Vic logo and the Vic T&T, but I suspect it's been discontinued with only the Delemont EvoWood 81 surviving. :-(

My favourite feature on the Soldier is the awl, I'm not really a regular user of the "normal" awl found on the modern officers knives but this one is really  good for poking. Oh, and it looks good too.

If you don't have one of these I suggest donating this month!

Minimalist tread for the minimalist thread. I've pushed tires to the "barely legal" a few times in the past myself.

Right time of year in Northern Hemisphere for new tires too - before snow and ice (if you live far enough north for that). I like how the nut releasing the bolt holding the spare is inside the vehicle. Makes it a little tougher to steal the spare. Haven't had a truck or SUV for a very long time so I haven't seen a current design.

Day 14/30
Ready for fishing with Dad tomorrow. Since he drove,  I left my keys at home and just took the Executive, a house key,  pill fob,  and Olight aaa on my dangler.

Breakfast bar for dessert while constructing an attack plan.

Day 11:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)

Preparing for lunch later today. On the menu is chicken and dumplings. I don't just use it out of the can, but add other ingredients: cubed ham, minced onion, minced garlic, a little Tabasco, and black pepper. I like to let it sit for a few hours in the refrigerator so the juices of the ingredients I've added can infuse each other. One of the tasks is getting the can containing the chicken and dumplings open. These are the best canned chicken and dumplings I've found, although anyone who is hypertensive needs to pay attention to its very high salt content, as they would with any canned soups. I've yet to use the Wenger Evolution 63 combo tool for opening cans, their version of the Victorinox Waiter, which was discontinued with the product line consolidation in 2013. Also had not seen a Wenger combo used in this challenge yet. Wenger's Evolution 63 has everything in a single layer: large spear point blade, combo tool, back layer corkscrew, toothpick and tweezers. Snagged a couple of these a while back. One of them is kept in the wine rack drawer, along with a Vic Waiter. Unlike the EvoGrip 64, these can still be found.

The combo tool is the same as on the EvoGrip 64 with a uniquely different shape compared to Victorinox's combo. Let's see how it does . . .

Didn't get off to a very good start going in the direction one would with a Victorinox can opener versus the direction one would with a Wenger. Reversed directions going the same as one would with the Wenger eagle beak. Works much, much better, but there's still a learning curve with keeping the hook engaged under the rim on larger cans. Nevertheless, it's cutting the lid right at the edge of the can now.

We get to the last bit where I had been going in the other direction which wasn't cutting the lid at the rim, so this isn't going to be pretty. Went one more cut, flipped up the lid and broke it off by flopping it up and down until the steel fatigued and broke. Shouldn't happen again as I know now which direction to go with the Wenger combo. A look at the lid shows a ragged edge, but the can rim looks pretty good where I went clockwise around it (same direction as standard Wenger opener). A clean cut at the rim on the can is more important to me than what the can lid looks like. A few more uses and I should get more proficient with it. Also worked better for me when I didn't try to take fewer big bites, but more little ones, not rotating quite as deeply into the can.

Bottom line: You won't starve to death during the zombie apocalypse with the Wenger combo opener, or have to resort to a bushcraft method for opening a can without any can opener. It will get the can open, perhaps not quite as fast as with a Vic or Wenger dedicated opener. When used in the direction you would use the standard Wenger opener, it leaves a decent cut next to the can rim. Don't expect the lid to be a thing of beauty afterward though.

Later in the challenge I'll use the Victorinox combo opener.

Day 15

We're at the halfway point! This is turning out to be easier than I thought it was going to be. Using the Tinker I took a cutting from my orchids for a friend, but now there is a bare spot on the tree that looks wrong to my eyes.  At least I got a nice box in the mail to console me. The package included an alox SD which I will be carrying tomorrow.

It is a Wenger Laser, but like yours it's not working (bought it knowing the Laser pointer may be broken). Trying to find out if it can be repaired, and else it's a nice display piece together with the Wenger Director (with old fasioned retractable pointer).

I've been inspired to try some hook usage. I used the hook to dislodge a stuck handle on a sliding door.

I thought I’d try another attempt with the combo tool. If I go slow and easy, I can keep the tool from punching through the cap.

Cool, or you could just twist that cap off...  ::)

Aww, that's not fun!  :D
