1986 SAK Article/Advice...
on: October 29, 2016, 12:37:53 PM
My slenderer, better smelling half sent me a link to some of her hippy bullsmurf, which is not relevant here - However I decided to poke around the site she sent me to a bit more and found this:

http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/swiss-army-knife-zmaz86jazgoe

Article in Mother Earth News circa 1986

Not much has changed  ::)

(My apologies if this has been brought up before.....)

Actually, he refers to it at one point as "an S.A.K.".

Motor oil doesn't seem very "mother earth" either...  I mean I'm guilty of driving a car myself just saying for that "hippie" type publication seems like an odd suggestion. Love the article though.

Was the spartan at one time called the Camper? or did the author accidentally use the wrong name for the Spartan? I know names ger reaused like Master Craftsman and Craftsman etc.

The article talks about trying out various knives of the same model to find one with good snap. ..yet there was just a post on this forum about how Vic is so consistent with the snap.

A letter from reader Boyd Hill, of Honolulu, Hawaii, appeared in MOTHER EARTH NEWS NO. 44 suggesting that "the Phillips-head screwdriver can be improved by filing about one millimeter off the point. This permits the fins to force their way down into the screw slots for a secure match."

Has anyone tried Boyd HiIl's modification? This is the first time I've heard this suggestion.

Maybe they were different in the past but the Vic Phillips are made with a flattened point now.  There are some other makes like SOG and probably Swiza that can benefit from filing down the point of their Phillips.

Nice article but calling a Spartan a Camper in between the 1st and 2nd paragraph put me off a little.  ::)
