Thanks Poncho.

I think that a challenge provides us with a good opportunity to test the tool. I see it as a very long-winded review.  ;)

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Day 5

No real challenge for the Signal today. Lunch duties as usual, I have not had to touch the blade at all and it has been used daily to cut food. Granted, it is mostly fruit and cold meats which is not that tough. I have learnt that I must wash it very well as there is quite a bit of suger in fruit and that will cause some corrosion over time. It also gets into the pivots and they become tight to open.

I did get a Lego set today that had some "tough" tape to cut.  ;) I will start building it over the weekend. I still have another set with a pneumatic system to finish first... I have a soft spot for Lego Technics sets.

I am hoping that Gohard's sheath will arrive tomorrow. The current one is holding up well, but custom is sooooooooo much better!!!

Cheers,

Pete

Yes, Gunfighter.  Well broken in!!

My riding buddy has one and swears by it. We often put in 700 km days and a good seat makes ALL the difference in the enjoyment factor. The seat I have on mine is probably the best OEM seat I have ever sat on and copes easily with the big days.

Cheers

G'Day

Day 6

And the new clothes arrived!!!

I asked Gohard to make me a sheath for the Signal. I wanted a very natural looking sheath. This is the beauty of custom stuff, I could design anything I wanted - withing reason off course - and Gohard has the talent to make it. As with the Signal, I added a set of coordinates on the outside. The leather is beautifully soft and I think it will develop a very nice patina.

So, what did the Signal do today? Well not to much I'm afraid... The usual lunch duties and opening the sheath parcel. I met up with a good mate from work and he fondled the Signal for a while. I think he needs one...  :pok:

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks Poncho, it is a really nice sheath. And being custom made, it is a perfect fit. All the sheaths I got from Gohard fits each tool perfectly. He takes a lot of care to make sure that the sheath is exactly the correct size.

G'Day,

Day 7

Another easy day for the Signal. I did get to test the awl though. I left my pokey thing at home and had to improvise to eat some small blocks of cheese. The blade is to sharp, I will most certainly cut my tongue, so the awl had to do.

It sits also on the inside of the tool, but is a separate compartment. It locks with the same mechanism as the other two inner tools, but the main difference is that you can close the tool completely and lock it if you want. The bit holder and can opener does not allow for the tool to be closed completely. The disadvantage is that the awl becomes quite a bit shorter close to the hammer. There is a small "cut-out" in the hammer that caters for the awl. I tried to capture it in the pics. It is not sharp out the box, but can easily be sharpened. I have not done that yet. I don't often use a multi awl, so for my use it was sufficient.

Later I will have to cut some dinner sausages too. MMM

I will post those pics later.

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Week 1 Summary

Well, One Week has already gone and the Signal has surprised me so far. I have used most of the tools, bar the saw and none of them have dissapointed me or have failed in their use. I use a blade daily for food prep, and the Signal blade is not to bad for that. For MY use a PE blade will be better, something like the Wave / Charge blade. I will in future add it and see how user friendly that is. It is not a shortcoming of the tool, I think that for its intended use, the OEM blade will do well. Originally I stated that I will keep the tool in its original form for at least 2 weeks. I am going to extend that for the full challenge and keep the tool original to the end. The January challenge I may use a modded version.

The inside tools has worked well too. When I put the racks on I did expect some tool play with the tool slightly open, but there was very little play. The HEX hole is a nice add-on. Another good pass. The can opener works very well and that is definitely a tool that should stay if you intend taking it camping or hiking. I only used the awl once today and not at awl for its intended purpose, it does make a reasonably food fork  :D. The pliers have had one work out whilst making lanyards, I will test it over the next few days.

I will do another summary at the end of Week Two.

Have a good night peoples.

Pete

G'Day,

Thanks for the kind words guys. I have been enjoying doing the thread so far. The biggest challenge is to find different stuff to do everyday.

Day 8

Today was a quiet day for the Signal. I had a busy day in the trains though. So lunch duties it was. I also got to test the little file/sharpener. It works very well on nails, but I'd hate to have to use it for significant filing. I know it is supposed to be a sharpener, but it is small and quite difficult to hold still. I guess in a pinch you can sharpen the blade with it, but you are more than likely to damage it. But then again if you are in such a desperate situation it may not matter.

Tomorrow will be a busy day for the Signal. I have three days off work and are planning some adjusting work on the motorbike and general tasks around the house. The bit driver and Hex hole should come in handy for that. I am also going to give the blade a quick strop.

Cheers,

Pete

I had the same thoughts on the little file.  That's why I put the file in place of the saw.  The little one is fine just for sharpening the blade, which I know is it's intended purpose anyway.

Spot on.

I am going to put the file back in once this Challenge is over. The Signal I will use for the January Challenge will look a little different to the original one. This month is giving me a good idea of what to change. So far it will be a PE blade and the file / saw swap.

Cheers

Yeah, I rarely, really never need the wood saw, but I do like to have one just in case.  However with the Signal, I'd rather have the file.  I can always swap it back in if I ever want to as it's an easy job.
