Have you ever bought two or more, just so the average price is lower?

I'm hoping I'm not alone here, but I just bought an expensive Victorinox Picnicker and now that I've found one (mint in box) AND paid dearly for it, I know another will be along shortly for half or a quarter of the price.  I'm probably going to want it so the first one won't seem as expensive.

Anyone else do this? Or am I all alone?

I have made secondary purchases but haven't fully analyzed the reason. :)

OTOH, I do have a tendency to make multiple purchases of items that I particularly like.

I like you explanation of lowering the average purchase price.  If you don't mind, I think I will use that rationale.

The best way to lower the price is to only buy the cheaper second one

But I do see your point  :D

I don't. This strategy will only lessen the average value of your SAKs.  :D

I'm with you.   But my sitch was a lil different.  I'm a bargain hunter so I found brand new pioneers from 2 different sellers for a great price, one for edc, one for the collection section.  Also bought 2 SI's together just cuz they were cheaper that way for same purpose as Pioneer.

I must say, now that I have my birth SAK, I want another one.   :D  :ahhh

  • You're amongst friends.
I don't collect anymore _but_ do buy backups of certain items. I suppose the difference is should something happen to the first one, the second immediately comes out of hiding into active duty :)

I generally buy multiples of any model I really like, so I have also looked at it in the same way concerning the average price .

I have not thought about buying two or more in this way.  I am generally a thrifty old crow but with this new thinking I just might take this into consideration.   Thank you.

  • It is what it isn't.
I have bought backups of my favorites too and I have also bought more than one at the same time to get a better deal on them.  I have even bought one, then bought a second one later at a much cheaper price to average it out so yeah I have done it or should I say justified it in many ways!  :)

Example:  Bought my first NIB Pioneer X for like $34 shipped, then picked up a second one that was "like new" but without box for only $20 shipped so it averages out!  LOL

I've done this for years.  Guns, knives, other durable goods, and you pretty much have to do this when playing the stock market.  This strategy works to lower your cost-basis, so you can sell lower, and still make a profit.  It worked well for me when much of my business involved buying goods at closeout prices from stores that were going out of business, often for less than wholesale prices, and then selling the merchandise in my store, and it works when playing the stock market.   Where this strategy doesn't work is when you buy things you like such as SAKs.  You tell yourself that you'll buy two so you can keep one and offset the cost by selling the other one, but then you end up keeping them both and that's money out of your pocket.

No!!!!!  I WILL SELL!!!!!!!  I PROMISE!!!!

Lately I've made some tough decisions to sell things I don't ABSOLUTELY LOVE to make room for things I do ABSOLUTELY LOVE.   I feel good about it.  Though, I'm definitely still deep in the hole....    (have some manners and leave that one alone.   :D)

  • Find me if you can...
To the OP, all the time. I am very mindful about the shipping cost as I buy a lot of stuffs on eBay. I found that, it is easier to negotiate for a bit of saving when dealing with listings that specify shipping costs, than ones with "free shipping". Those "free shipping" people often go like, "it is free shipping already. The shipping is on me".  Say what?!?

  • Apparently it is possible to have too many tools;)
If I'm undecided about a particular MT I will usually have a look in my spreadsheet to see what my average purchase cost was (yes, I have lots of duplicates, and one day I may even sell some of them !), and if the price is less than my current average I am more likely to buy it.
