Thanks for all of the positive comments. In reply to the pin hole, I believe the newer cellador scales already have a pin hole. My Waiter is an older nylon scaled 'economy' version from about 18 years ago, so didn't come with the pin hole.

I like the idea of the pointed tweezers - I may have to borrow this modification!

As my Nylon scales were looking a little worn, and with a bit of time on my hands with the current virus situation. I decided to have a go at making some wood scales. These are my first attempt. I have used some light oak and have made them 'plus' to include pin and pen along with tweezers and toothpick. The scales could do with a little more work as the tools are a bit stiff to remove and replace. Overall I am pleased with the results. Hope you like!

Side view showing the thickness. The oak started at 4mm thick. Now a little less from the sanding, but does create a bit more bulk to the Waiter!

Probably a nicer size to handle for a long time? Maybe less pocket friendly but nice for whittling.

I have been thinking of doing a similar mod to my other sak. Do you mind briefly sharing how you did it? Did you use any power tools or just sand paper? Thanks.

Thanks, no power tools were used! It was mainly done using tools from SwissChamp and Leatherman. The fine finishing was all sandpaper, finishing with 1000 grit paper and teak oil. The grooves for the tools were done with the file/saw from SwissChamp, and for fine finish wrapped sandpaper around the file. To get the initial positions of the rivets, I gently squeezed the SAK and wood in a soft jaw vice and then used the chisel tool from SwissChamp to 'drill' the holes until the wood lay flat against the side of the SAK. Finally I used superglue to hold the scales on. Hope this helps!

Not sure if it's still the case, but was the Waiter not the tool with the best Function/Layer ratio?

I remember having one, unfortunately it saw very little use before someone decided they needed it more than I did

It is a Victorinox Waiter that I have....if you look at my previous post you will see it was a nylon economy scaled Waiter....and there is a split ring too! On the front side of the main blade are the words "VICTORINOX SWITZERLAND STAINLESS ROSTFREI" on the reverse is "OFFICIER SUISSE" along with the small cross and crossbow.

Found this on the Home Depot website. A knife set and block that not only includes a Waiter, but a place for it in the block. Pretty neat, but I keep a full-sized Nogent Le Kim in my block, and I'm sure the Waiter would end up in my pocket; even though I already have and use one.
