Interesting use for a Signal
on: August 30, 2017, 09:41:12 PM
Last night I needed to get under my car to fix something.  I keep a small 3-ton bottle jack in my car because I hate those stupid scissor-lift jacks that come in most cars.  When using it, you have to tighten and loosen an odd flat bolt thing (i guess it's called a release spindle)  to lower the car.  The Jack comes with a metal pipe that works as a handle and they kind of crimp one end a bit so that it will work as a wrench for the little spindle bolt.  It does not work well.  It slips a lot and it is very frustrating.  When I used to EDC a Crunch turning this little flat knob was easy.  Now that I have a Signal, it has been slightly frustrating to deal with this knob because it takes a lot of hand strength to turn it.  The pliers will work but it's really a job for a wrench.

Last night I randomly stuck the "bottle opener/tent stake puller" around the knob and sure enough, it found a really strong purchase and provided excellent leverage to twist the knob like a wrench.    :ahhh

I could have just done this with an adjustable wrench that I keep in my car but the Signal was on my belt and I was already under the car so this was surprisingly convenient.     :D

Interesting fix you have jacked up.  :tu:
Time to improve the old bar/wrench or make a new one?

Here is another one.

I work around pallets a lot.  About a year ago my boss wanted me to disassemble a pallet so that he could use the 2x4s for some strange project.  One of my coworkers had the store's tool bag with the claw hammer and they were using it.  So my boss just left me with the pallet and said to wait till the other guy was done with the tools.  Out of boredom and curiosity, I pulled out my Signal and started yanking out loose nails with the pliers.  The interesting part is that the hammer on the Signal has a wide hammer surface that creates a lip or sorts at the edge.  This lip is not terribly bad at basic prying functions.  By digging it under the nail heads and then finishing the job with the pliers I was able to do most of the work before my coworker showed up with the proper tools.
 :multi:
Naturally, this process is easier with a proper claw hammer or pry bar.  ::)

...

I guess you have just demonstrated that Leatherman could advertise two so far unknown Signal built in tools.

Yeah, I really should just jb-weld something to the end of the bar so it works again.  That would be the most convenient way to operate the jack.   :-\

they hardly seem like uses that could be advertised as a Tool feature to me.   :D  But then nearly every company out there seems determined to convince us that a spot to attach a lanyard should count as a tool feature...  So...   :D

I talked about this once before in a different thread.

The first day I got my Signal I was opening and closing all the tools and I noticed that the hammer has a small notch cut out of the corner.  Then my mind was blown when I saw that this little notch allows you to use the awl tool with the handles in the fully closed position.

 :D
