Let's see how far maximum minimalism can go.
on: November 02, 2008, 06:07:26 PM
As an experiment, I have been carrying just my Leatherman P4 as my main multitool, along with my a pocket knife, just to see how far it can go in terms of useability and function.  I have to say, so far so good.  For my normal everyday needs, the tools on my P4 have been working just fine.  At times, I have had to use a little thought before using it, but so far it has handled everything Ihave come across, and I as many of you know, I work at a gator park here in Florida, and need to also be part time carpenter/plumber/electrician/landscaper.  I not only wrestle alligatorsm but have to maintain things and do my fair share of handy work.  Granted, we always have dedicated tools just a radio call away, but I've been trying to get by with as little as possible, and have been doing just fine.  I will keep you guys posted as to my progress (or lack there of) on my little experiment.

I can see how when you're wrestling an alligator, that would be the time
you would notice that the 'gator is in need of some dental work.  :sak:

Nice pics. Bet you're never bored at work, and have more to worry about than a MT pinching your hand  :P.

My max would be a OHT with my Swiss Tool, a heavy combo. My current job doesn't require any super heavy work so I edc a classic with vic mechanic, they gets the job done. The two saks are always in my pockets the heavier MTs can always be carried in my bag.

Nice pics! :tu:

I carry just a P4 some times. It really does most EDC stuff with ease. :salute:

PS. How do you like that Case Peanut? I've been thinking about getting one of those Yellow handle CV Peanuts... Seems like the ultimate minimal/traditional knife on the market. :) I might even try carrying just that and a Zippo and see how long I can last before I come running back to my MTs. :ahhh

At the risk of Def moving this out of here, I love my peanut.  I have the Bone Stag SS model, and have used it for years now, for everything from cutting up apples to skinning 11 foot gators.  There really is not much that little guy can't do.  It handles 99% of what I need it to do, which is why I decided to make the P4 my edc.  If I can get by with just a Peanut as my cutting tool, let's see if I can do the same with a Squirt.

I was just thinking about the same thing, remove the spirit from my belt and only carry a vic compact for tool. I'll have to see how that works out. But that would leave me without pliers, so I dunno...

Nice picture latinoheat, you have a very interesting job :salute: Just out of curiosity, if for example a gator went rogue and you have to put it down. Can you kill it with a knife on the head through the skull into the brain just like in the movies or do you have to go through the throat to the brain? Thanks

Back in the 80s, there was a gator at our park that was old and dying, and in a bit of discomfort.  The guys decided to put it out of it's misery.  They took it out back and shot it in the head with a .40 caliber pistol.  The bullet bounced off it's head.  A knife to the head won't work, neither would a knife to the throat, since as soon as you got close to it's throat it would tear your arm off.  Rogue gator.  Hmmmm.  We would just catch it and put it in with gators it's size or bigger.  They'd handle things all on their own.

Why?  :D

I've been carrying around so much crap that never gets used, so I'm going to see how little I can carry and still get stuff done. Just replaced both spirit and compact with a micra on keychain.

Sounds good! I could probably get away my new CRK Umnumzaan and a Leatherman juice S2.  :tu:

Thanks Latinoheat, I think you just busted a movie myth! I show in a movie once the hero put a knife through the gators skull, only in hollywood :D
Keep up the good work and stay safe  :salute:

A .40 caliber round can ricochet off a human skull too, so I'm not surprised it happened to a gator.

It sounds like you guys found a great solution to the problem!

.40 caliber ricochet off a human skull! Wait a minute the knife through the gator skull might be possible! I have seen knives when through human skull, it might be that the weight of the bullet aint enough and a knife have more weight and is harder than a bullet.

I would imagine that the gator's skull is thicker.
