MFS-->My First SOG (SOG vs. Nickel = WIN WIN WIN!)
on: November 06, 2008, 09:44:24 PM

:D Just traded my Gerber for a SOG, and am already liking it much more than the Gerber....love the heavier mass of it, and the one handed opening thing!! So much that I even made a video of it:

Apparently, you can cut through a quarter...didn't have one handy so I used a thicker nickel (Canadian...poor beaver). And also, apparently, it's illegal to break/damage currency...so no one sue me please. Using a moderate grip, the cutter went through the nickel like butter, with no damage. However, the poor nickel wasn't that fortunate...

Arrggg...into the jaws of DOOM!

OH NOES!!!!

SOG - 1, Nickel - 0...KO!!!

The SOG is a serious SD tool as well.....the heavy mass of it makes it a god fistload, as it fills the hand fairly well (no sharp corners). The gears HURT....like HURT when swinging them into people.

Anyhow, I am loving the new multi...

Brendan :)

EDIT: The scissors are just pure genius...such a smart design.

That's interesting what you say about the scissors.  That seems to be one of the biggest complaints from SOG owners.

That's mainly because the scissors on the SAK I have sucks, and the Gerber that I had before the SOG didn't have scissors ;).

seeing this I thought what the hell and cut up a quarter,  its almost funny how easily the power lock will go through one.  I made 4 cuts in it useing one hand with next to no effort.  Only damage is the cutters are shiny now instead of the black.  Makes me wish I had a leathermen or a gerber to compare it with.  I know the compound leverage works but I wonder how big the diff is.

Any one with a leathermen willing to destory some currency?

I'm cheap, so you'll have to stick with a penny. All three cut with with ease with no damage to self. Spirit suprisingly require the same effort as powerlock, maybe due to shorter cutting jaw and hard wire notchs so part of jaw go through first. Wave requires the most effort. I don't have my gerber flik anymore (may the a hole stole it cut off all his own digits with the blades) but I'd imagine it would go through it just as easy, since anvil cutter are inherently stronger than bypass.

Nice thanks jzmtl,  So I take it the compound leverage does not make much if any of an improvment?  At least not with cutting.

It does when compare to wave. I think the reason spirit is on par with powerlock is because the cutting edge is shorter, and the two hardwire notches made it so you don't have to push the entire length of cutting edge through the object at the same time.

I imagine chocolate would be a bad choice for composition of our coinage. :D

Hrmm... but then a new minting could have actual mint in it...

Oh the possibilities.
Got those frog legs.

Great pictures cyberspyder! SOG wirecutters do have a great reputation for strength.

Question: is the Canadian nickel made of pure nickel (shiney silver color all the way through) or does it have a layer of copper in the center?

Apparently, nickel is too expensive, so I believe it's just steel.

Seems like 'just steel' would just rust
