SnaggleToothMF Deployment Assist Device
on: March 20, 2018, 02:56:48 AM
The Snaggletooth MF deployment assist is marketed as direct screw in option for wave modification to any knife with a screw in style thumb stud. The idea is to present a more professional looking option to the common zip tie and other tricks of the mod community.
While the system is patterned to work specifically with Cold Steel knives it will work with most folders. But the true question is 'what you get and does it actually work?'.

Unboxing you find a plastic bag containing:
1)Snaggletooth part
2)a screw and nut for mounting
3)a piece of plastic to make for protecting the original thumb stud
4)an allen wrench
NO instructions
Fortunately assembly fairly self-explanatory and there are videos available on the company website.

The procedure is as follows unscrew the original thumb stud and then screw the snaggletooth in making sure the lip on the underside it's flush with the top of the blade. By far the most difficult part of this is removing the original thumb stud.
In my case the stud on my old Recon 1 was so tight that the recommended process of covering it with the plastic tubing, holding it with vice grips, and just screwing it out would not work. I was instead forced to clamp it in a bench vise and twist off with vice grips.
Instaling the Snaggletooth was a simple matter of lining it up and screwing it together. In order to be universal fit the Snaggletooth omits the bushing extention found on the stock CS stud. I also applied a generous drop of Permatex blue threadlocker (not included) to the new part as recommended in their instruction video.

Function on this mod is as advertized. The tooth "hooks" and "waves" as a proper folder quillion should. The nut portion that serves as your new thumb stud while smaller than the original is not uncomfortable. The best part is it gives a professional clean look to your knife that homemade mods dont. As for longevity I have not had it long enough to encounter any issues or speak on the overall durability.

It is avalable left/right hand specific.

Thanks for the review!! When just using the thumb stud to open the knife rather than waving it, is it possible to still flick it open?

I’m on the fence on this one. I sooo want to buy but just don’t want to have this conversation with a LEO you know?

Yes it is
The only diffrence is the diameter of the nut is smaller than the stud but sticks out just as far. It can still be opened manually just like normal.
If your knife was legal before should be after provided wave opening is a legal feature in your area. That is where you need to check, the wave itself.

(I make no guarantees though; LE discression varies)

Here are some pics I didnt include because they arent the best but they do show the other side and the top
You can see how the hex nut replaces the thumbstud.
This is the right hand version. If you open it left handed then you are pressing on the tooth not the nut.
