SAKs and Spreads
« on: March 25, 2018, 04:17:37 PM »
Based on an original idea by Nix the time has come to launch a SAK's and Spreads topic.

Now I know Marmite is a "love/hate" thing. Peanut Butter can also lead to a few exchanges of views. Cheese can certainly divide the audience. But we can all agree that a good spread is worth its weight in SAKs if you're hungry.

So to start with it's Swisschamp Sunday. Posing with my Black SC is a baguette with a selection of spreads I found in my cupboard. For the record here's peanut butter, marmite, cloudberry and apricot jams. I haven't got any Boursin only cheddar at the moment and that's not so much a spread is it?

Points will be awarded for novelty or unusual spreads or breads displayed with your SAK but only if you actually eat the stuff afterwards. I'm willing to accept cheese posts if you can make a case that it's a spread. And that folks is down to you. If it comes to arbitration of any disputes I'll be asking Nix to decide. You have been warned

Which tool do you use for the spreading?  Large blade?  Fish Scaler?

The saw is great for cutting through a baguette!  :tu:   Unless it gets too dry then it can turn into a real mess!

I need to make some pimento cheese spread to include here!  Ever had any pimento spread, Phil?

For spreading it'll have to be the large blade. And here I suspect that the DofE tool may have an advantage with it's rounded off nose. I feel an experiment coming on.

The Fish scaler is for removing tea bags from mug, stirring coffee etc etc

Never had pimento spread Dan so you're gonna have to talk me through that. If you can mix it with cheese I think you're onto a winner though

Great point about the rounded tip of the DofE.  Makes sense, and I hadn't even considered using it to remove tea bags!  Another awesome alternative use!

Pimento Spread is a southeastern US thing but it seems like it would be right a Brit's alley!   Put in on bread or toast and you have an elevated cheese sandwich, but beware, it's extremely addictive!

I've got a Wenger Junior Scout S11 which has a rounded tip too.

Great picnic knife.
But then again, is it too collectible?

Nice to see this thread getting going here!

This morning it was toast and marmalade. Marmalade courtesy of a Compact. As a kid, I loved reading Paddington Bear stories, and that bear got me interested in marmalade. Dad liked the stuff, too. Now I'm addicted. The one problem with this particular jar is that when it gets 1/2 empty, the 91mm SAKs don't reach down into the jar easily and ends up being a sticky mess--just like Paddington.

El C, I occasionally make my own "Pimento Cheese spread" myself. Good stuff! Post up your recipe when you make it.  :tu:

So far, and I know it's early days, nobody has mentioned my favorite spread. It's a WWII invention, born of necessity in Italy, but still loved today around the world. In addition to being a great spread, it sometimes shows up baked into rolls or croissants.

The first person to post a picture of this marvelous spread, slathered with a SAK, onto a nice piece of toast, a roll, a bagel, etc...will win a NIB Alox Cadet. Pic must include SAK, prepared delicacy, and container of said spread.

I don't like Peanut Butter, for the record.

No, I'm not allergic to Peanuts or any other nut (though they are legumes  :ahhh)
Is that italian spread the famous "sobrassada", which we also eat here very often, with that strong red color and smell?

Well done Nix. That's an excellent GAW and who wouldn't want an Alox Cadet?

Marmalade however is top notch for a spreadable feast.

Sandwiches containing marmalade are always called Paddingtons in this household. And I'm a thick cut chap by the way, what about you?

By the way how did you get on with the Compact  as an instrument of spreading? Any thoughts on the utility / inconvenience of the blade point. other thank for spearing chunks of orange from the jar?

Oh dear..... Might it depend of the consistency? I think a Pâté could be considered a spread......yes? I suppose it might depend on whether or not a food stuff could, in fact, be spread on a bit of toast, cracker, pita, or bagel with a SAK. That would be my working definition of a spread.  :salute:

Strictly thick-cut here. Anything else is a missed opportunity in my view.

The Compact did a marvelous job spreading the marmalade. A wee bit of technique is required. I find the spear-point blade makes a good marmalade extraction device, limited primarily by it's length and the depth of the jar.

When applying the marmalade to the toast I use the knife in an edge-first manner, being mindful to have the edge angled up and away from the toast to avoid any unintended reshaping of the toast. Wiped the blade clean (-ish) on the edge of the toast.  :salute:

Well, Nutella is the correct answer. I don't want to appear to be provincial here and the ingredients are very close. So this may actually be the winning entry. However, I'm going to defer to Fast Bill's judgment here since he is closer to the continent than I am.....

Fast Bill, would you consider Schneider's Delinut Duo to be the same or close enough to Nutella to be a winning answer?

EDIT: If Fast Bill has gone to bed and doesn't answer by 18:00 local time, I will make a decision myself. Or flip a coin.
