removed BO with acid but is now weird colour?
on: January 18, 2019, 02:31:25 AM
i soaked a serrated blade in spirits of salt(hydrochloric acid i think) for a few days to get rid of black oxide but it came out cloudy looking and rough although still sharp.

anyone got any ideas how to get it SS looking again. ive tried vinegar with no luck and would rather not use sandpaper.

You are going to have to sand and polish it.

Hopefully you didn't damage it too much with the acid.

I sent a BO tool through a vinegar bath for a couple days and got similar yet not as aggressive results ::) They are more grey oxide now  but I would think hydrochloric is a bit to harsh  :ahhh good luck with getting it back to SS and as Steve said I hope you didn't harm the metal with the acid :salute:

yeh i tried vinegar for a few days. but it didnt affect it at all. the acid took a couple of days to turn it a dull grey  so left it in there longer.

oh ill guess sand and polish with a dremel.

i was hoping to get the sandblasted look of the SS mp600 tools. maybe they arent sandblasted before BO is applied.

Stop! I don't know how pitted it is from the pic, but before you use anything too aggressive (again ), you'll be able to remove that oxide with a bit of Autosol and a cloth, or even a bit of Brasso if you want to retain some of the oxide and achieve a grey lustre... or even toothpaste. If you want to use an abrasive, use ooo or oo wirewool or even better red scotchbrite if you can get it.

Edit: Reading your post again - Autosol and oo wirewool would do it.  :tu:

Edit Edit: For future reference, Autosol and a cloth removes black oxide effectively.

Let's just say I know the feeling of starting to mod a blade with full intention of making it better and ending up with a cluster smurf that haunts your nightmares for years to come...

Though, this looks solvable with polishing. :D

Yeah I have a few "corpses" in my garage  so I also know all too well.

My approach now is to use the least aggressive method first and work from there.
