I’m wondering what size you need for the Free Series P4?

Well, I contacted Leatherman. A sales rep told me the large sheath fits the P4.

Nice enough, looks plenty strong and the flap is nicely designed. Not sure about the price though.

It's about time they came out with a real Leather sheath, the price however

There are plenty of custom handmade in the US sheaths for that or less.

Also according to a LM sales rep, the P4 is 4.25 in length and it will fit in the large sheath, but won't be a snug fit once the sheath is closed. The price of the Ainsworth by it self ain't worth it, but with 2 years replacement warranty, is not a bad deal.

Wow that is a beautiful sheath, and I am glad Leatherman has been embracing leather sheaths more. So while I dont want to discount this item out of hand...

American Bench Craft.

Sturdy, 4mm thick leather. Snap closure. Riveted construction. Made in USA. Handcrafted and Guaranteed for Life. 30 bucks unless you want some customization.

And they make them for a variety of multitools and knives, including the Surge, SwissTool and Buck 110.

I'd have a hard time purchasing the Ainsworth sheath alone for $50.

$50 and they didn't even rivet the belt loops? I have tools that cost less than that, and they came with better sheaths. I'd rather go custom-made. As with American Bench Craft, many makers have better warranties.  If I were LM, I'd warrant the sheath for 25 years like the tools.  I still use the original sheath that came with my great-uncle's 40 year old Buck 110.

Ha ha!
Y-yikes. That whole grey sheath idea is not up my alley at all. When did you ever see truly nice looking grey leather. Or nylon for that matter.

I do like the style and color of this Ainsworth sheath, and the slanted grab of the sheath seems to jive with the new Free line of styling.

But still, I'm with Cody. At the very least they should have riveted the loops, and or the top if the sheath threads like the Buck 110 sheath.

I too have a 40 year old Buck 110 and sheath. Good quality.

I'm gearing up to see American Bench Craft's Buck 110 sheath

I prefer black or brown sheaths as well ;) Love the old school LM sheaths and I agree that for the money a much better sheath could be obtained and still have plenty of money left over :salute: I was just kidding because of the whole grey is the best tool, sheath thing with the Free series :D

Seriously? Talk about an overpriced piece of....

Go and make some comparisons with some of the hand made stuff on esty for just a few dollars more. Plus it only has one orientation.

They are way of the mark at $50

Compare the new Gerber Centerdrive sheath at $23 made in the US with US leather no less   :tu:

Still...I wouldnt call this a swing and a miss. More like a swing and a double or maybe a triple.

We've all been asking for more leather, and many of us remark how nice the OG Wave sheath is. That's stitched.

So, Leatherman listened. Mostly. I think ALL of us have mentioned the awe of the original PST sheath, which is of course riveted.

So not too bad really. We cant complain they aren't listening, and complain when they do

That looks very nice. I wonder the thickness of the leather on both this and the Ainsworth?

Are either of them full grain leather vs not. As leather goes, there are better cuts and qualities.

I'd love to see how these stack up against one another for that price difference

I think they should have used a T instead of a S, pricewise...to be honest.

I made this a while back, horizontal carry sheath for a Charge. Present for a friend. Horween Derby Leather. Cost me about $23 in materials to make. My leatherwork is better these days, if I make another it will significantly more 'polished' than this one.

As someone mentioned, you can probably get better for less on etsy. That said, for people who want a warrantied, quality sheath and are no interested in making their own, in other words most of the market, this does seem like a nice product.

For one, it is touted as "the best from LM yet" , but it is not grey

secondly, am I really the only one who sees that the name is badly chosen,
as in,
the "AINSWORTH" just "ain't worth" its price tag?  ??? :D

As a leatherworker , who almost always throws Leatherman sheaths , over the left shoulder , I’ll reserve judgement till I see one . For that price , I’d make my own , 2 years on a good quality leather product , is not a long lime . I often repair stuff thats over 20 years old .

For those who lack the ability , tools , or inclination to make your own , it might be option . It’s hard to judge leather quality , and stitching quality from the available pictures .

Best Regards,

Chris

I'll stick with the old school Leatherman sheaths. They are still readily available on E-Bay and the ones I have will likely outlast me  :o

Shots fired from LM  8)l. Good for you Leatherman for coming out with a leather sheath we've ( I ) been asking for.  I'll tell ya what, my old style Wave sheath is really nice.  Was this a sheath they gave with the price of the Wave?  If so then this sheath ( price wise ) is hard to makes sense of.  I likes the looks and the warranty is fine BUT as mentioned good quality leather should easily last 2 years.  I will say the 2 years is welcomed very much tho.  I don't know if anyone else is warranting their sheaths?

I have no experience with that particular snap, is it any good?

You can color-me:  out!  Doesn't fit the Wave, and isn't worth fifty dollars in anyone's universe.  :o

2 year warranty? Why fing bother? I have leather sheaths that are older than me and look like a Million dollars... If I have $50 for a sheath I'll get an artist to make one for me that is perfect (for probably less than $100, and made of even better materials).

I just realized..wtf! no magnetic clasp? for shame...I guess it wasn't worthy of magnets, if it was it would be grey.
