Looking for MT/Knife recommendation
on: July 30, 2019, 01:04:36 AM
I have a few events coming up which require me to wear a fancy suit, and I realized today that the only knife I have that I could carry for such an event would be the Gerber square.
However I would prefer a few more tools. I am looking for a knife/mt with knife, scissors and nail file.

The blade should be large enough to handle a steak if necessary, but not too big as to be intimidating. The scissors and nailfile for last minute fingernail maintenance and to cut off loose threads on my suit or my wife's dress. It also should have a stylish–clean look to it. For example the Gerber square or the Vic alox series. No plastic handles.

I would appreciate some recommendations

If you are up for modding a Charge into this :D

It may just fit your bill exactly with only the addition of a bit driver :salute: has a removable pocket clip as well

Good idea Poncho, but I would prefer a non modding solution, as I do not own a Charge nor the tools to disassemble it  :D

The first one that came to mind for me was the Vic Comact...

then you said no plastic handles , technicaly they're cellidor not plastic and the black is very stylish.  Plus look at all the added utility in a 2 layer form factor.  Nail file, hook, bottle opener, can opener, cork screw, blade, scissors, tooth pick, tweezers, ball point pen, eye glass screwdriver...  There just is not much missing.  And did I mention it's very COMPACT???  Pun intended. :tu:

If you just must have solid metal scales the Pioneer X might be a good option...

The Pioneer X and Compact are my two favorite SAKs and general recommendations.
Neither 100% meets your requirements, the Pioneer X has no nail file, and the Compact has "plastic" scales.
Both worth serious consideration.

Thanks all  :like:

The Pioneer X would be perfect if the awl would be switched out with the nail file of the Cadet.

The compact is certainly very interesting. I might switch out the cellidor scales for more fancy ones. Does someone know where I could find, maybe TI, scales for a 91mm SAK? I know about SwissBianco, but my experience with that guy makes me not wanna give him any money.

The Evo‘s are interesting alternatives, but I hate the scales. Just not my thing.

The Swisstool spirit is way too big. I need a tool without the bulge, so I can just carry it in my suit pockets along with my wallet.

The Compact was the knife I was considering, also.  There are usually some Swiss Bianco Titanium scales on ebay for sale. I’ve also seen some wood scales on sale on Etsy.

Another option might be the new Leatherman Free T4.  I’m not sure how bulky it is but it has all you mention.

What also might fit the bill is an alox Classic paired with a nice traditional knife.  Even though two items, the combination might even be less bulky because could split between pockets.

Leatherman PST II. The older ones ,without "PST ii" on them, can be had for less than the price of a Vic Alox.

Fantastic scissors and file too. Classy as it gets. :)

:iagree: that is a good one :tu: I hadn't thought about that one since he said knife based but that one is compact enough to almost be as small as most knife based MTs  :like:

Some nice ideas here!

I guess I could always get a Vic Solo (they make those in Alox, right?) and pair it with an Alox Classic

Looks like I will have to do some ordering...  :D

What about a Wenger SS Esquire?  I have one and I do believe it can handle a steak.  It can fit easily in a shirt pocket or wallet.

I'll give it a test on some chicken tonight and see how it does.

If you plan of pairing why not a Cadet in the color of your choice and a Classic in Alox as well?

Isn‘t the Esquire the same size as the classic? Thanks for testing  :tu:

I could do that as well, but that would also mean to double some of the tools. I also don‘t own a solo yet, so i have an excuse to buy one   :D

I also vote PST II.  :salute: won’t let you down, a classic statement and great conversation piece!

Yepp, and I just pulled the trigger  :D Not a Solo though. I found a Compact on sale so I ordered that one, plus black plus scales. The scales are a compromise, but I think I can live with it. The pen should come in handy when I get bored during those fancy events

I have to throw this out there..

I would LOVE a file ADDED to my Pioneer X, but until that happens, I have become quite adept at using that oh so wonderful awl as a file, Er scraper.

When I nick a nail or something, I just lightly scrape at it with the awl.

Just a thought...
