It is the first SAK that has let me down on a tool usage! Will just have to work around it.

Does the XL have a combi tool and a two opener layer?

No, the combo tool is on the 3rd layer. 7th layer on the other side.

Strange, if they decided to remove by design the can opener and give you a cap lifter/screwdriver/pry tool, they should have used the stronger one from the 2 opener layer  :dunno:

Yes, most versions of the WorkChamp XL have both the combo tool (paired with the hoof cleaner) AND the can opener/bottle opener layer.

On to one of my favorite tools on the XL. The bottle opener...this does the job very well. But I rarely use it for that job. On the 111mm they are thicker and also used as a pry bar! They exceed in that department! It also gets locked into place from the liner lock as does the main blade. Making it much safer!

It's funny how some of the can openers in the 11mm's are really beefy, while others are more standard.  I do like the more robust versions for their pry-bar qualities.  :tu:

Day 16 photos

So this morning I went to open a can of tuna and went with the combo tool. Got the can ready, XL ready and couldn’t open the can!
The body of the XL is so wide, you can’t use the combo tool for opening a can! Tried it on both sides, nothing.  Had to resort to the regular can opener on the XL. Any other XL owners out there, have you found the same issue? I’m more than disappointed. Maybe the XL is just a collectors SAK to be looked at?? Hopefully there is a secret out there another owner can tell me!
It’s the left-hander can opening option...

The XL is perfect for emergency beer opening. Both sides have a bottle opener.

Never tried to open a can with its combo tool. Won't work I suppose.

Really like seeing you using this monster.  :like:

Yes the bottle opener is good to go on the combo, just not the can opener. And speaking of emergency beer opening...

That one tool is part of the reason I'm glad I waited so long to get an Outrider. Well, mostly because its MSRP exceeded my normal spending limit; and secondly, by the time I finally got one; it was the liner-lock version with the stronger openers.

So with the WorkChamp XL being big and wide size wise, how do I carry it. A sheath is really the best option. I really like this one and it is a tight fit at first and will probably take more holster time for a more smooth pull. There is still room at the very bottom for your finger to help hold the sheath down as the knife comes out.

Today is the Seat Belt Cutter aka the Rescue Blade. Now this is a excellent cutting blade. The serrated blades is well know for cutting material that the plain edge can’t do as quickly. Being trapped and needing to get out of a situation where time is a matter of life or death, this is the blade to have. The nail notch gets it out of the SAK and deployed fast. The blade can even be opened by catching the notch on just about any surface, dash - steering wheel - even the seat belt edge. The curve end of the notch allows the blade to slide under the seat belt and not stab you or the person trapped. Hopefully its a blade you never have to use, but priceless if you do!

Nice write up Rapidray! I hadn't realised about this feature of the blade - good bit of design there.

Like the old-school magnifying glass too!

Looking at the Large Gutting Blade today. Starting life in the 108mm series, it was carried over to the 111mm. This blade is the “grandfather” of the Seat Belt cutter/Rescue Tool.
The large gutting blade used in hunting of cleaning of game, has also be used in the Fireman and the Parachutist models. Last photo shows the two and its really easy to see it evolution versions of the blade.

The good - no excellent Saw blade! One of the best tools ever is the saw blade. On the 111mm is the best wood saw cutter out there! The blade itself is built like a tank and thick to where you can aggressively cut wood and not break the blade! A must have item on any outdoor knife regardless of size length.
