All safe and good here in SE Queensland. We had a few smaller fires here a couple of weeks ago but nothing "catastrophic".

I don't wish to take away from the horrific scenes in Victoria and New South Wales, but there is a LOT of misinformation floating around social media with doctored photos and pictures from previous years and even some images from completely different countries. Much of it is being carried across into mainstream media by sloppy journalism.

The buzzword of the day being thrown around is "unprecedented" and this is in most cases simply not true. History is being ignored for the sake of having sensationalized news-tainment reports that are better than competing media outlets.

Yes, there is a LOT of fires, yes houses and in a few cases whole communities are being lost, yes people are dying.
BUT, don't believe everything you see or hear, some of it is just not true.

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/bogus-bushfire-images-do-rounds-on-social-media/news-story/87122a62a5a54df31b88f65b7396f42c?

Those unscrupulous smurfs out there trying to scam people claiming to be charities are the lowest of the low, amongst them those that loot evacuee's houses. Misinformation is rife. I will view and read many varied sources of news. This article is important for pointing out we need to remain critical of all "news" we see, and not just trust unverified documents.

As for the unprecedented comment, article from 23rd November, make of it what you will, but remember the fire season isn't over yet.

I remember the good old days a few weeks ago when that was the amount of burnt land on the entire continent.
I hope it stops soon. Stay safe!

It seems the firefighters have turned a corner and are starting to get more containment.

They must be exhausted at this point.

I'm hearing about a lot of donations which is good. Serena Williams played in NZ and donated all her match fee, Metallica donated, lots of others as well.  :tu:
170 firefighters from NZ and likely many from other places (and resources) as well.  :tu:

I have been following the news on TV loosely, and just discovered this thread.  It was heart broken to see lives lost and getting affected, and many wildlife losing their habitat as well.  Hope all our members and their families in the region would stay safe, and Tazzie is right about getting multiple new sources to get a more accurate picture, since sloppy journalism could cloud judgement.

31 days later, 100,000 sq km burnt.
Or, 12/10 of an Ireland.

I'm starting to get a bit anxious, there is a fire not too far from my house and it is out of control.  :o

I'm hoping the wind stays blowing away from us, if it turns I will get more worried.

Six Australian bushfires across NSW and the ACT are burning at emergency warning level, with residents in affected areas being told to seek shelter as it's "too late to leave". The Big Jack Mountain fire, the Border fire and the Postmans Trail fire, all in Bega Valley, were upgraded to emergency warning level on Saturday.
NSW RFS spokesman Greg Allan said the three Bega Valley blazes are burning towards each other, creating highly erratic conditions. "The three fires in Bega are creating their own weather conditions and the advice to people in the area is that it's now too dangerous to leave and they should remain in place," Allan said. Allan said the fires are unlikely to be contained on Saturday, as parts of the state experience temperatures in the mid-40s.

Stay safe Greg !

Thanks guys.  The fires near me seemed to have calmed down a bit recently, so hopefully they will be able to get them under control over the next few weeks.

Unfortunately some more properties to our south were burnt out before the fires slowed down :(

On the 23rd of January we had 23mm of rain. There have been a few smaller showers since as well. Not out of the woods yet but there is a noticeable green tinge to the grass where before it was all brown

Well done on getting some decent rain.  We are still waiting (and hoping) in Canberra.

Because we are almost surrounded by fires (most not close enough to worry us at the moment) it doesn't matter which way the wind blows we still cop a lot of smoke (but annoying smoke is much better than being burnt out like has happened to way too many people     ).

I'm hoping that all these fires we've had will be a big wake-up call on managing fire risks from now on.  This will hopefully cover not just the obvious: cold weather hazard reduction burning, but also mechanical clearing, improved building standards (better fire resistance of buildings), allowing owners to clear trees & bush around their houses, restricting where development is permitted, improved maintenance on power lines, and better methods to detect & jail arsonists.
