G'Day,

Thanks for the wishes and the thoughts. They are well received.

The key is planning for us. The pace the fires are spreading is quick, and things change by the hour. The whole area where we were is being evacuated at the moment. Saturday 10:00 is the deadline to get out. It looks like the whole Snowy Mountain area is under risk.

TassieRob, good to hear you are OK, at this rate most of Oz is going to cop the burning. Scary to think that some of the burnt areas are the size of small countries.

Cheers, Pete

Been following the fires in the news. Last night, the total burned area was almost as large as awl of Portugal...

Hope everyone stays safe and they manage to end this soon.

Stay strong!

It was very smoky overnight and this morning, mainly from the mainland fires in Victoria and New South Wales. Now the wind is up which has blown the smoke away but makes the conditions worse for the fires still going. Pretty bad up the East Coast of the island at the moment

Prayers and well wishes sent to y'all.  Is it too much to ask for heavy rains for a few day?  I heard on the news the temps are not helping matters.  I was watching the evacuations and was praying the firefighters can get ahead in some way.  Stay safe and thanks for checking in.

It seems hellishly hot. Hottest place on the planet!  Combined with the fire and smoke, it must seem like one of Dante's nasty circles...

I made a small donation to the Australian Red Cross. It's but a drop in an ocean of need, but these guys seem to be doing some good work. I thought it would be nice to offer a little tangible support.

These bushfires make me sad just thinking about them. I've been to Australia a few times and driven around in many of those areas, and they were quite special to me. Thinking that some are just ashes now is just depressing.

And all the people who had their lives affected in very serious ways - or worse. Just tragic. One can only hope all the efforts to control and extinguish these fires succeed soon.

All good here. Faint smell of smoke in the air, and slight haze. Saturday was bad for smoke until the wind blew it away and it has been mostly clear since. Idiots in a neighbouring suburb setting alight reserves in their own community and taking valuable resources away from what they should be doing. A school was set alight the other day, too. There are some sick people out there.  >:(

We are lucky, the devastation in NSW and Victoria is huge. And Victoria is only just starting to come into their "normal" fire season....

All safe and good here in SE Queensland. We had a few smaller fires here a couple of weeks ago but nothing "catastrophic".

I don't wish to take away from the horrific scenes in Victoria and New South Wales, but there is a LOT of misinformation floating around social media with doctored photos and pictures from previous years and even some images from completely different countries. Much of it is being carried across into mainstream media by sloppy journalism.

The buzzword of the day being thrown around is "unprecedented" and this is in most cases simply not true. History is being ignored for the sake of having sensationalized news-tainment reports that are better than competing media outlets.

Yes, there is a LOT of fires, yes houses and in a few cases whole communities are being lost, yes people are dying.
BUT, don't believe everything you see or hear, some of it is just not true.
