My first SAK is going for repairs
on: January 18, 2020, 12:06:12 AM
Although it has no monetary value, it's sentimental value to me is priceless
This Bantam was a gift from my wife and first born in 1986, it was all I carried for a few years even after I broke the combi tool
I've been reluctant to send it in, feeling I'd rather have it like this, than risk losing it
Lately though I've been thinking I'd like to carry it a bit but not like this
So with encouragement from my wife, I've been in contact with the warranty center in Canada, and have decided to send it in,, both scales are cracked, and the combi tool is broken, the blade is in great used shape, and they're aware of the sentimental value
Thought I'd share the journey and give updates when I have any

I sent my first SAK in a few years ago too Greg.  It's going to come back cleaned up and shiny.  The problem I ran into was it looked so good that I retired it!

I've already thought of that hazard, if it happens I'll probably pick up a new Bantam to carry.
My rediscovery of carrying simple Traditionals has me wanting to carry this knife a bit

Of course, this is my experience with our Connecticut office I noticed when I selected "Sentimental Value" (which I did on the Artisan, thinking Vic did like Leatherman, and would not give you the old tool back), Victorinox will rebuild the tool. On the two I didn't (a Pioneer and a SwissTool), I got new ones back in their place.  You should have no problem getting your Bantam back in as-good-as-new condition, unless something happens.

I really like those older Bantams. I have two, one made probably in the last 10-15 years or so, then another that is just like yours, albeit mine has an ad for an Austrian company on the blade.  I find those are lighter (3 pins instead of 4, no lanyard ring), and thus easier to carry.

Greg, I recently got back a GAK from factory service.  It turned out great, like new in fact.  I think you'll be super pleased.

Unless I missed it up there somewhere, I didn't see how you broke the combo tool.  Would love to hear the story if you can bear telling it.

Cheers, eh!

Thanks for the positive feedback Myron
As for the combo tool, I don't exactly remember, but as a working mechanic it involved a car and prying, I continue to pry, poke and prod with all my two opener layers with great results though

Cheers eh!

Does anyone have the address for sending in SAK’s in the United States?  After over 30 years my Boy Scouts Explorer broke. I can’t seem to find the address. Thanks in advance.

I started here when I sent one of mine in: https://service.swissarmy.com/

They collect some information, then asking you to print out the service request and add it to your shipment. Address will be provided during the process  :tu:

Here's the final outcome

The only contact I had with Victorinox after sending the knife, was an email stating that it had been received and was being assessed, and that someone would be in touch to discuss repairs.
That contact never happened,
Today I received a registered letter and package. The letter had no information on why, but was simply an invoice for a Bantam and a credit that zeroed the amount owed.

Now to the package

They returned my untouched Bantam, that came originally with nylon scales, and no keyring or scale tools, along with a new Bantam with all the bells and whistles  :tu:

I'm surprised they didn't offer to fix your original Bantam for cost, Greg.  I had a similar experience with Victorinox recently when I sent my 108 GAK in for repair.  At first they said it wasn't a Victorinox product, but then I convinced them that it was and so was allowed to send it in.  Eventually I got an email saying that the knife had to go to Switzerland and that someone would contact me with an estimate for the cost of repair and to get my ok to proceed.  Two weeks later when this contact still hadn't occurred, I called them.  The CSR said he'd been waiting for my permission to proceed with the repairs.  Huh?

When the GAK finally was returned to me it was like new, and there was no invoice for the cost of the repairs.  So, a somewhat muddled, confusing experience but with the best outcome.  I guess maybe just use your old broken one for a Christmas tree ornament now.  Enjoy your new Bantam!

Thanks for the comments

With mixed feelings I am happy with the outcome
I was reluctant to send it in, and possibly lose it, and had considered just purchasing another to carry occasionally.
So with that in mind, Victorinox took care of me  :tu:
But I think it would have been nice too, if it had been repaired

Myron

Following your GAK journey helped my decision to send it in  :hatsoff:
I think maybe the cost and availability of a current model Bantam is why they went that route

Possibly a chat with one of  our fine modders if you're happy to go that route with your sentimental original ?
That way you've still got a bantam for day to day duties while your old ones off getting a freshen up
