Do I have a Champion C with Long Nail File?
on: May 06, 2020, 01:22:18 PM
Hello all,

I bought my first SAK in about 1988 while on holiday in Switzerland as a kid. I just chose the one that I liked the most, and fortunately my father let me have it as it was my birthday.

Many years later, while having a clear out recently, I found my knife. I’ve been trying to identify the model from the amazing SAKwiki, and I think it might be a Champion C? It’s exactly like the Champion circa 1985 in the photo on the wiki, and mine has the long nail file.

If anyone can confirm or deny my amateur identification, that would be really appreciated! Now, time to get to work on restoring it...

I don't see a long nail file. ???
This is what the long nail file looks like:

Good luck with the restoration.  :tu:
You could always send it to Victorinox if you like, it can take a few months to return home but they do a good job.  :salute:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Also, on a LNF knife the large blade and scissors open from the same side.
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

Thanks, Don! I am officially an idiot. I mistook the metal file for a long nail file. In fairness this lockdown has made my brain turn to mush, as I am herding 3 feral children most of the time...

I’ve ordered some new plus scales for it, as they are hopelessly gone I think. I’ll give the tools a clean and an oil, and see where I stand from there.

Cheers!

I’m guessing - it should have a big ‘V’ on the Victorinox tang stamp? I’d expect that after late ‘86.

The magnifier is post ‘84.

I’d expect all the liners to all be anodized.

I can see the ‘hump’ back side screw driver, which would be post ‘85. And I’d expect a chisel event though I don’t see it.

Nice to see another original ‘80s Champion owner!  Mine is black and from ‘84. Also upgraded the back scale to the plus version 4 years ago.

Welcome to MTO!

Thanks very much! To answer your questions:

- yes, it has a big V in the Victorinox tang stamp
- yes, it has a chisel on the reverse side
- yes, the liners are anodized

I’ve actually ordered the plus scales in green, just to give it a fresh look. I’ll keep the original ones just in case, though they are knackered!

I’m looking forward to getting to know my old knife again. Yesterday I gave it a good soak and clean, then metal polish, then oil, and then sharpened the knives and scissors. It looks fantastic, so I can’t wait to get some new scales on it...

It's quite useful. Sometimes on eBay and other listings the LNF is not visible, but when you see the blade scissors on the same end you know it should be there :)

Thanks for the replies and I am happy for you to be reacquainted with your knife. I haven’t been without mine since I got it. Been around the world and back...it’s just too precious to me.  It is mostly retired from any heavy duty tasks, but still gets use around the house.
