After sorting out my trusty steed for short shop run it occurred to me that maybe there are lot of bikers with lovely bikes, cool stories and nice pics. with a bike and Victorinox.
This could be a place for that.
I'll kick off with a photo of today's carry, red SwissCard posing here with Helkama Kulkuri XII from '82. Bought it new, used heavily and then it stayed in a shed at my parents for a long time. Few years ago I stumbled on it, spend quite some time on making it presentable and ridable, added new saddle (Selle Italia Century The Lion King)  tape (Fausto Coppi) and tyres (cheapo Chinese, only ones I could get at size and colour I wanted). It is now far from pristine, but lives up to its name; Silver Surfer;  when I bring it out for a short ride:

5 inches of snow today so it is a good day to check on bikes ;)
Wifey’s new - bought this summer - Insera was moved to from bike shed into storage shed to winter with Silver Surfer. Earlier I would’ve welcomed the idea of tiny wheels but not any more. Material quality of Insera seems to be smurf:


Bike has not seen rain per se, yet handlebar is showing clear pitting :(
Not cricket when compared to 40 year old frame of Helkama which indeed has seen serious all around action in its youth.
Dunno, Helkama is not making bikes locally anymore so perhaps their quality is at the same level these days...

Great idea, old Lefty - sweet looking ride too! Here’s my 20 year old road machine, only thr frame came from Litespeed, the rest of the components were selected and fitted by me - 9-speed groupsets are a bit old hat these days, but a definite step up from the 6-speed blocks I raced on in my youth! My racing days are long gone, and this only comes out on dry days (my even older Reynolds 525 Pearson is my winter bike - it has mudguards!) so it’s a bit dusty. If you look carefully you’ll see my blue anodised Ti-scaled Pioneer X mod on the saddle which is also wearing a bit thin these days!

Seriously fast looking machine! Modern shifters and pro looking cockbit!
Litespeed is a frame legend! Way ahead of what Finns could do with Helkama, ever!

Also hats off for the Pearson! A bike fit for the gentleman racer!

SS comes with Shimano 12 gear group set with downtube shifters. I can understand why they were a good idea back in the day, but whenever I hope over from my Moulton into that I find myself struggling at first

Brifters (brake shifters) are a real step forward over the downtube shifters and I wouldn’t go back even if I still use glue on tubular tyres with the Litespeed- I’ve used them for over 40 years now and just love the ride quality! Mind you, if I do get another bike to replace the Pearson I’ll probably go tubeless as I have UST on my off road bike and like them a lot! Next pic will be the Pearson, once I’ve given it a clean as it’s looking a bit grotty from rides over the past few weeks in all weathers.... Moultons are sweet too - remember seeing some racing versions back in the late 1970s early 1980s. Alex even made some in Ti if I remember rightly! Bit of a Ti fan as 2 of my bikes use it - I really love the look, ride quality and durability of it - my Litespeed still looks new, just needs washing and the occasional rub with scotchbrite on marks left by gravel flying up.

Only one Moulton was ever made with titanium frame I think. A one-off by Mike Augsburger with Alec's permission. The Ti AM frame was very light, some 500 g less than normal AM Speed.
The bike was not finished and was later completed by someone in US methinks.

Moulton race bikes did have some success early on yes, but the bike establishment did deem them against the rules due to wheel size and that was that.

Very nice bikes in any case. Mine is few years old tsr30 just before they went cheaper way with components. Not double pylon level, but fits my modest needs, and budget.

There was talk a few years back of doing more in Ti, but given that the stainless ones can cost £16k probably as well that they didn’t make them! A friend of mine has a Brompton, and it’s a real killer on hills - I can’t ride it, simply not strong enough! Mind you, I might fit fit a newer lower geared group set to the Litespeed, but might save that for the Pearson replacement..... but that’s a few years away! Love see your Moulton at some point!

Here’s an earlier photo, seems to be only one I could dig up from my phone right now.
Not a good one I admit, I stopped for a snack and was very pleased to find a soff drink of Gods being served, so Focus was on the can.

Midninght Blue colour, Campy gearset, fi’zi:k saddle, DB rims and Miche hubs. And yeah, mudguards (did last 50 of a 100 K ride on my Guv’nor in pouring rain just before ordering this....). So, as said, nothing fancy, but serves my needs and with Brompton scratches all my small wheel itches just fine

Riding Rover safety bicycle must've been an experience!
Guv'nor's geometry is that of a 1930's Path Finder up to North Road drop bar. Quite relaxed by today's road bike standards but not the best for busy city driving methinks. Mine comes with Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub, there is also a five speed version (or maybe that is called Speed 5, dunno) and somekind of Morgan tie-in model

Guv'nor's geometry is that of a 1930's Path Finder up to North Road drop bar. Quite relaxed by today's road bike standards but not the best for busy city driving methinks. Mine comes with Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub, there is also a five speed version (or maybe that is called Speed 5, dunno) and somekind of Morgan tie-in model

It definitely was - quite scary as it was a museum piece! As you’d expect, very relaxed handling, very smooth, but quite heavy - a machine for its day and the roads of the day - never tried an Ordinary (aka Penny Farthing) too scared to try! Let alone ride a six day race on one in Maddison Square Gardens - just imagine that! Terrifying- track banking on an Ordinary! Bad enough on a standard track iron, let alone 3 foot/1 metre up!…. :facepalm:
