Rust on my AL...HELP
on: January 10, 2009, 11:08:47 PM
Dudes and dudesses,

OK, I am working a football match today and grab my equipment belt.

On it are:

Baton
Cuffs
CS Spray
First Aid kit
Cree LED
Key holder
Riot Gloves
Swiss champ
Leatherman Charge Al

I go to use the AL and find there is RUST on the inside tools....not all of them but certainly enough to get me concerned.  It appears to be surface stuff at the moment.

Its less than a year old  :ahhh

My question is....How do I get rid of it,  and how can I prevent it in the future? (a coating of WD40? )

I hate to say it but the Champ was untouched :climber:

It'll just be surface rust I'm sure. Rinse it, WD40 - good as new.

It must have been wet or damp last time you used it I guess.

It wasn't the Villa game you were on was it?

I used to come here a lot.

The one that overlooks the pitch? Between Witton Lane and the Holte End?

There's always lots of coppers in there. It looks like the bridge on the USS Enterprise.

I used to come here a lot.

Well, not to rub it in but I got a wedge of overtime, free food and a perfect view of the pitch in a heated room with good banter from my boys..........oh a policemans lot is not a happy one  ;)

Yup, I've heard it said that it can be a pleasant day's work. Just don't volunteer for when we play B'ham City - then you might actually have to do something! ;)

It's the RUST MONSTER!   OH NOOOOOOO!  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Quick, throw it some cheap Chinese knock-offs to distract it while I hide the Leathermans!

I would make a concoction of white wine vinegar and baking powder... Then take a cotton ball or Q tip and apply to affected areas! It works wonders on rust!

Vinegar and baking powder will just neutralise each other.  What am I missing

Flash to solve your Leatherman rusting problems 1) Don't let Micky handle them at all. 2) Don't let Micky see your LM's .
& finally , some what controversially stop Micky thinking about your LM's . I think electric shock aversion therapy should do the trick , on Micky of course . Flash I am sure you have contacts in "Internal security" to help with Micky's "treatment". All rusting of leathermans in the UK has been linked to Micky so if you do the above you should be all good mate. :P :D :D :D

Me and two friends spend quite alot of time here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cr%C3%A9hous every summer, getting there via 16ft open boat or kayak and carrying only fishing gear, first aid, water, ration packs and cooking equipment....it lies about eight miles offshore of Jersey, completely peaceful as bigger boats can't access the main Islates due to the mile and a half of jagged rocks and reefs around it.
Last weeklong trip I took my Charge xti, used it for about every imagineable task, from prying edible shellfish to disgorging fish, to fixing the rain water catch tanks various valves and taking out someones door lock that had rusted solid in the constant sea air (on high spring tides there is only about 10ft of land outside the doors of the houses on the main islet.

It rusted fairly badly on the blades and the plierheads....I soaked it in diesel on my return, scrubed it with a scourer after an over night soak, cleaned it with thinners and then oiled it with machine oil.

Now you'd never know it'd been rusty at all....the diesel just lifts it off.
