Pocket Knife Recommendations?
on: December 27, 2020, 05:32:56 PM
I am looking for a pocket knife similar to a Vic Popular:

Thin profile, slipjoint, blade length between 1.5 and 3 inches. Something you can easily throw into your pocket or wallet and forget it’s there until you need it.
Not looking for a specific brand, but I like a uniform and simple design.

I would appreciate any suggestions

Thanks for the recommendations gents  :hatsoff:

Now I know that I have to search for the term "pen knife". Are there any other companies I should look into besides Böker, Case and Buck? I would be fine if it had only one blade, I certainly don't want more than two

Anx of these traditional folders are to thick for wallet carry, but a Victorinox Cadet, that would most probably work for you. Very thin, lightweight but capable.

Or if you want something more modern looking, a Spyderco GrassHopper would also be a good option for a slim profile knife.

Wenger Patriot is practically exactly what you are looking for, but don't know how available they are stateside as Wenger is no more, maybe on the second hand market, ebay and such.

If I remember any more, I'll be back ;)

Why not the Victorinox Excelsior alox?

Pretty well the modern production of the one in your photo.

Super lightweight (21g, same as the Classic SD  :o ) and thin (6mm, same as Classic SD alox, 2/3 the thickness of the Classic SD).

I'm assuming that SirVic is looking for a traditional slipjoint and not another SAK.

Hen & Rooster is another brand currently still making slipjoints

If you are looking vintage then Camillus, Schrade CutCo, Utica, Ulster  and Queen are some to look at.

You would probably like the Queen #47 like I have here

Thanks enki and Altis for the recommendations  :hatsoff: I thought about those too, but Steve is correct. This time I am looking more for a traditional folder, not a SAK. I am really liking my bladeless MP400 and looking for an easy to carry, unobtrusive, non-tactical looking folder as a companion.

Will look into Hen & Rooster  Keep the recommendations coming, I need something to do while the wife watches christmas movies  :D

Keep in mind the trad folders are quite a bit thicker than the Popular, especially the ones with the bolsters. No way carrying those in the wallet.

If you are after slim then  something like this Case might be the ticket although it might be a bit short at   3 1/8"

I've been down this rabbit hole before. I had found the Case pen knife ... And that's just the thing I'm after.  But the price is too high for me.  I got a Bantam Alox, which serves the purpose... But didn't scratch the itch.

Mercator, doukdouk and I'll add Higonokami .... These all seem like interesting options :ahhh

Not yet, but the issue with those is the shape of the handle. While it is a good shape to use, it is too bulky in the pockets. So for this scenario I wouldn’t pick a Opinel.

I found these so far:

Otter Mercator small

Tech Tool 1

Bear & Son One Blade Pen Knife

I would like another ultra thin option, but these seem hard to find  :dunno:

Some of these may have already been mentioned, but below are a few thoughts.  Some of these are too thick for a wallet, but all are easy to toss in a pocket.
  • Victorinox - Alox Bantam, (discontinued) Pioneer Pruner, (discontinued) Pioneer Apprentice, (discontinued) Pioneer Settler
  • Case Pattern #33 (pen), and similar knives by Boker, Hen & Rooster, Rough Ryder
  • Case Pattern #087 (pen & jack), and similar knives by Boker, Hen & Rooster, Rough Ryder
  • Case Pattern #37 (Sodbuster Jr)
  • A. G. Russell Ultimate Pen Knife
  • Cold Steel Lucky One or Lucky Two
  • Lionsteel Shuffler
  • Benchmade Proper
  • Spyderco Grasshopper or Honeybee

Cold Steel Lucky might be up your street. Modern version of a pen knife with carbon fibre and S35VN blades. Small, thin, very very capable. There is a two blade version current and a one blade which is discontinued but still available in stores.

I think at some point in the last few years a lot of the ALOX models weren't available in the US that were still offered in Europe, Bantam being one of them.

They are available now from different retailers, Amazon included. https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Alox-Bantam-Silver-Vic0230026/dp/B000MLU5MU

I very much like the look of this Knife Center exclusive RED ALOX one.

  • [current production] Alox Bantam
  • (discontinued) Pioneer Pruner
  • (discontinued) Pioneer Apprentice
  • (discontinued) Pioneer Settler

Not sure its wallet thin but its very light and relatively thin.  Al Mar Ultralights.  I have the smallest one and its not bad.  The blade is over sharpened but it carries well and is well made.  Not a big fan myself of Aus8 but it also not a bad steel.
