Recommend a Victorionox MT...IF only one
on: February 25, 2021, 12:40:57 AM
Forgive my ignorance with the brand, but I've never owned a Victorionox MT.
I've got several SOG, LM & Gerber.
I understand the Wave is the most popular LM, what is the most popular Vic.
I want to get one (I understand there are many opinions)...
My question is, What would you buy/keep if you could only have one?

Welcome to  :MTO:
Assuming you mean a pliers based tool and not one of the knife based tools they are famous for, you should get a Spirit or Spirit X.  With the tool kit if it is in your budget.  The tool kit will come with a ratchet based bit holder or an L shaped bit holder, the ratchet tool is more expensive.

Forgive me for answering your question with more questions, but the short answer is that it depends, and your answers will help us help you zero in on the best option...
  • Are you looking for a traditional Swiss Army Knife (knife-based MT), or for a Victorinox pliers-based MT?
  • What will be your primary use for this tool?  (e.g. carried on your person, kept in a vehicle, kept as part of a collection, etc.)
  • Any special considerations in terms of tool load out, size, etc.?

If you need to measure anything, the original Swisstool.  I use mine at work, where I have to measure, and the ruler on the handles makes things easier for me.  If not, by all means the Spirit.  It's one tough mt, and is more than just a gorgeous design!  Just my .02  :D

Like one vendor put it, if the Swisstool is the Volvo of mt's, then the Spirit is the Ferrari!

Thanks all!! Yes, the multi tool would be my preference.  And it seems the Spirit x is the consensus overall.  Don't have a real "need" for one (as I said, I've got several SOG, Gerber and LM)....BUT, I really want one.  Now, where's the best place to buy?Amazon seems to have the Spirit X for about $105....that sounds like a reasonable deal, or any suggestions for better sources?

Welcome to  :MTO:  sloatdog  the Spirit is rarely cheaper anywhere else on the norm  so Amazon is probably your best bet :salute:

prices seem to be pretty close wherever you look so there's probably a factory mandate to sell them at a specific price.  You might want to buy used. If that wouldn't bother you you can save about a third.  Or you may want to hold off on buying because there is a new model out that has thumb braces to allow for one hand opening but it's not widely available yet and also they do go on sale every now and then.

I believe you are essentially correct, Alan.  It used to be that, if one shopped around, there were usually some pretty good deals to be had, but that seems much less common now.  I think most major manufacturers have implemented Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policies, which (as the name implies) specify minimum prices at which dealers/distributors may advertise (list) their products.

I mainly carry Spirit XC cause of serrated butterknife, i have 2 X version with straight blade. I recommend buying Spirit cause tools are bit easier to acces thsn regular SwissTool.

And i could say any of model is great but even much better paired with plus set

OP, I think you are in for a real treat.

I've collected roughly 100 pliers-based MT, and if I could only have 1 PBMT with me, I think that would be a Spirit.

And if Victorinox could bring another version of Spirit MXBS and put the saw back into the chassis, that would literally be my be-all end-all PBMT.

I don't really mind if the saw is present or not  :dunno: I just want an MXBS (S/S or B/O) but can't find them for love nor money. I have sent Vic' UK a message asking if (and when) but no reply yet and, to be fair, I'm not hopeful  ::)
They don't like it up 'em!

There are a lot of fine MT's around in this world. However, My medium sized favorites are (top to bottom, but not necessarely in that order of preferance):

- LM Wave. Old type for Dutch Police. With standard tools.
- LM Wave Plus. Modern type for Dutch Police (which has different tool configuration. Not commercially available. See second picture, which has the newest version on top.)
- LM Rebar
- Vic Spirit (every configuration)

In fact I love the Spirit most, but love the diamond file of the Wave also very much.
A Spirit with diamond file would be top of the bill.

Definitely looking forward to my first Victorinox.
BUT, I don't understand all the miriad of suffixes & styles.
Spirit X, XC, Swiss Tool X, CS...AAAHHHHHHH!!
LOL, obviously is love to have them all.
But since I have nowhere within a couple hours that carry Victorinox, the images and features (along with your recommendations) is all I have to go by.
Guess I'll just when I finally decide, just hope I don't wish I'd have chosen the XCSXCMCDSXCD...I'm so confused

Spirit gets my vote. I carry one with the butter blade.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

OK, so you're clear on the difference between the Swiss Tool and the Swiss Tool Spirit, right?  The Swiss Tool is the larger version with straight handles; the Swiss Tool Spirit (often simply referred to as the Spirit) is the smaller version, with curved handles.

While combinations of suffixes are common, the suffixes follow a consistent nomenclature:
  • "X" - means the model has scissors
  • "BS" - means the model has a black oxide finish (models without this suffix have a polished finish instead)
  • "C" - means the model has the serrated sheepsfoot blade, often referred to here on the forum as the butter blade (models without this suffix have a plain edge spear point blade instead); this suffix applies to the Spirit only
  • "Plus" - means the model includes a kit with a bit wrench, bits, and corkscrew
  • "Plus Ratchet" - means the model includes a kit with a ratcheting bit wrench, bits, and corkscrew

The above list covers everything currently on the Victorinox website, but not everything that Victorinox has ever manufactured.  If you run across anything else, let us know and we'll help figure it out.

THANKS SO MUCH !!
Helps decipher and help in my choice.
I think I’ve settled on the Spirit X....
The other options is my sticking point, just gotta think it thru and decide.
Thanks again!!!
