Working brass cold...
on: April 22, 2021, 09:30:56 PM
Presuming this is not a  great idea from my 1st failed attempt at making a bale? The ends of a 3mm rod that I am flattening are just becoming brittle and crumbling away. Is it best to heat first before working even though I am use to peening it for pins this seems a step to far for working cold. Same for nickel silver?

Any advice gladly received  :dunno:

With cold working, less is more. As tiny taps as possible.

I still think it might be better to heat up to red-hot and allow to cool in air, though. :dunno:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Depends on the temper of the material you’re working with...and how aggressively you are forming it.  It does sound like a fairly hard/drawn temper. Anealing should help make it easier to work with. Hard to say without seeing what or how much was done before there were issues.

Reminds me I gotta get some 3mm brass for 111mm modding.
