I think I have developed a type...what’s yours?

From the last 4 mods I’ve completed it appears I have developed a ‘type’. Always been a saw man but I think this confirms it as my favourite ‘other’ tool - outside of blade of course - be it metal or wood and the 2 layer format has become my default. The lumberjack is the most recent and was converted from an alox bantam which was just too thin for my liking - much prefer a waiter. These are on rotation as EDC at the moment but I do have soft spot for the blue one with the rather delicate 108mm style opener. All these mate very very well with a manager, executive or other scissory baby SAK on the keyring.

What’s your favourite, not necessarily most used,  ‘other’ tool?

Fun topic!
Here are two modded knives I have.
I always like having a wood saw in my knives, it goes back to a nostalgic feeling for my first SAK, a Camper.

I recently like adding an inline Phillips to any mod when possible as well.

I'm awl-ways bothered by a SAK without an awl.

The Compact is a great SAK....but I can't really get behind it because it doesn't have an awl.

I use scissors far more often, but the awl is so handy that it is the one tool I really like to see on a SAK.

I have a tendency to carry ALOX SAKs with saws for outdoor activities, and celidor SAKs with combinations of scissors, mag layer and combo tool for indoor activities.

There are exceptions.  My "type" of choice is based on the expected activities for the day.

Nice duo. The bushcrafter is the one that finally got me liking alox. Only just recently got my first pioneer!!

My combo would be the saw and scissors, but also throwing in a Phillips, the only thing is I really don’t like a magnifying glass nor little light across from the Phillips on the top, so I had one made but then also made one myself with a unique little tool across from the Phillips besides a magnifying glass,,
Anyway when they had the farmer which was my first alox I really liked the scales, but it lacked tools, then they came out with the pioneerX, so liking both a saw and scissors I was like  :rant: but then came out with the farmerX I was like  :woohoo: both the saw and scissors! Now if they would only put a Phillips on the bottom!

I would say I definitely have a type - compact base.  I love how replacing the opener layer with the combo tool eliminates a layer without loosing that much capability, unless of course you are like Nix and need the awl, then it is a big capability lose.

The top two are just compacts with custom scales.  The bottom left, might be what Nix needs.  The bottom right is 93mm and no back tools.  There is another SAK that would fit perfectly in this picture but it is in the process of being made.

As a subset of the above is a more specific type - the Yeoman.  Adding the magnifying glass/inline phillips layer to a compact, is such a sweet addition.  It adds such an awesome level of utility.  Top left is the one that got my SAK addiction truly started with its special scales.  Then there is the YeoCho (bladeless Yeoman with file instead of blade), Smoky (Yeoman with wood saw), Mountain Yeoman.

There is also a Syph Yeoman that is not pictured.

Sheepsfoot blade, scissors, inline awl, no hook and no keyring attachment.
93mm 70g, 91mm 65g, great weight to use ratio.
I do like some other combinations however these two utterly dominate the pocket carry time.

I would have to go with scissors.  Vic’s scissors are of course outstanding, and better than a blade for things like fingernail maintenance, beard trimming, and getting a clean cut on the end of a piece of paracord with minimal loss of length.


Honorable Mentions:

Can Opener - I don’t use it often, but when I have needed it, it’s saved the day

Pliers - The small Vic pliers are more capable than they sometimes get credit for.  It is funny because when I don’t have them, I don’t seem to miss them that much, but when I have them, I seem to find things to use them on.

Small blade or inline awl - I really like having beater blade.

These are cool - I do like a sheepsfoot especially the massive ones on a British Army knife. Since I found that you can use the hook as a caplifter I see it in a completely different light...some good potential for layer reducing there now!

Like Nix, I'm a big fan of the awl.  I use it fairly regularly, especially for starting holes in wood to drill out.  Right next to it, literally  :rofl: is the hook, which I like to use for boot laces and carrying bags.  Mrs. R can use both for knitting and macramé.  That hook is a perfect macramé hook.

For me its mag glass.  While its not used everyday or even weekly I like having it.  Explorer gets the call other than workdays then its my Champion.  Just yesterday I got a nasty splinter and the mag glass along with the pin helped me extract it.

I’m gonna be the party pooper here and say that my type is the basic FOUR. Knife,Awl,Openers, and Screw Drivers. The extras just seem like gimmicks to me these days, as when I try to use them they are usually too small/weak for what I need them to do so I reach for the dedicated tool. I would say the file might be one I like for fingernails and fish hooks, but I can live without it :dunno:

I’m also an avid fisherman lol so it has a double meaning. And my preferences change like the wind so I could have a different favorite tomorrow but for today the Vic Soldier is my favorite haha

A pair of Vic scissors is standard equipment for one of my angling forays. Love 'em!  :tu:

Actually I found this really great little pair of scissors with micro serrations made by Rapala for $5 , they fit nicely in the tackle box! :tu: Maybe I’ll post a picture of them later in the cheap and cheerful section.  :cheers:

For a while I carried dedicated scissors, too.

I have a clamp that incorporates some scissors. That is an excellent fishing multi tool!  But I still enjoy using the Vic scissors more.

Yeah, I have a Pioneer X but I just don’t like the weight of it in the pocket so more often than not I carry a soldier or alox electrician, sometimes I carry the micra on my keys for the tweezers and scissors. I find that the knife blade usually does what I need it to for the most part. I guess I’m a minimalist  :dunno:
