My Tinker is my main kitchen tool, cooking for one a kitchen knife is unnecessary. The large blade, can& bottle openers are enough, small blade, awl and Philips get used everywhere else.

Until this point I have always used the main blade for everything. However reading this thread has given me cause to reconsider. I guess that is the great thing about our forum, we're always learning, reassessing and expanding our horizons.   :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

When I carry a SAK with 2 blades, I usually use the small blade for any task it will handle. The large blade doesn't get used as often and stays free from tape. It's also sharp when I need it. If I am cutting food the large blade is my go to. I guess it's a clean/dirty blade thing as well.

I use the large blade for most cutting tasks, mainly because it’s easier to open and I’m lazy. I keep the small blade clean and sharp for precision cutting, digging out splinters, etc.

I have a Recruit in my kitchen which I use exclusively for opening any cans without pull tabs.  Its also my food package opener.  I tend to instinctively use my main/large blade on my SAKs.  Small blade is ready but not used often.  I like the blade on my 58s for real detail stuff.

Same here. Though the small blade on my carrier Tinker did get some use a few moments ago: opening a package whose contents I didn't want to damage.

Food on the large blade, always cleaned with some red wine (or dish soap if it's a sad meal  :D), and small for everything else, especially "precision" stuff, even if now I will probably use my minichamp for that. Like most of you, it seems  :salute:

I keep it simple: Big Job-Big Blade, Small Job-Small Blade.

As a fellow fireman , I also unsurprisingly have the same view .

I find the small blade hugely capable for my uses. I wouldn’t mind having it at the other end of the knife in place of the large blade, actually.

Up until really recently I always defaulted to the large blade and kept the small one clean and scalpel-sharp. If I was cutting open a box I'd just put my index finger on the back of the blade as a depth stop. That was also really good if I ever lent someone a knife, but recently I've found myself needing to cut food with my EDC knife and that makes way more sense to do with the larger blade.

For many years my little Recruit was the only SAK I had, and defaulted to using the small blade for all the dirty tasks, like opening packages, and dedicated the larger blade for the cleaner tasks for food, and any tasks that the small blade was too small for.  This kept the large blade clean all the time and free of adhesive tape gunk.  It just made more sense.

I think the small blade is one of the very few things I've not ever used on most of my SAKs, along with the fish scaler...

Even when you need to do some "precision" stuff ? Sometimes I feel it's better to have a shorter blade for smaller tasks, it feels more accurate.

Such a need has not yet actually arisen, I guess...
It's gotten to the point where I was considering swapping the small blade for a Sportsman style nail file, on those models without the metal saw.

I tend to prefer the emergency blade over the rest.  I like a Wharncliffe style as they are easy to shapen and they tend to come sharper when new.

Since i first seen a victorinox, i have always thought of the small blade as a spare blade. I tend to save it sharp for detailed work.
Along with the cs, opener layer and red scales, I see any other model as a second degree.
But thats my traditional mind setup.
However I fancy the alox models. :woohoo:
