Must be the cost of running it - staff, time, order tracking, inventory tracking.

Can't be expensive to pull existing parts out of bins and put them together in known orders. No development costs at all.

I saw a documentary on how Vic builds knives ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRWsus9vr6A&list=FLD5PKR4JDmm3jU4nze78vyg ). I would love to be let loose in their assembly area for a couple of hours.   :D

Good work Steve. Now the only question is… What’s next?
Give me some time to enjoy this one!

I'm still thinking a Deluxe Explorer + wood saw would be cool. No idea what I'd call it.

Though size-wize, that's getting awfully close to the Swiss Champs I already have.

I had some free time last night and my short tweezers haven't arrived yet, so I crafted a nail file to put in the third tool slot I opened up in the back Plus scale.

I cut one of my wife's emery boards to the right size, added a small piece of it to the end to make the nail nub, then filed it into the curve to match the curve of the scale. Finished it by blacking the nub with a Sharpie.    :)

Here's an odd piece of SAK tool trivia and maybe a use for it...

I discovered this evening that the spine of the current pliers (with crimper) from the start of the curve at the jaw pivot to the end near the tool pivot is exactly 2" or 51mm.

Though I've never used the fish scaler on my Champion or Swiss Champs to scale a fish, I have used the ruler on it many times for quick measurements.

My Deluxe Explorer doesn't have a fish scaler, but it now has a piece of Scotch tape across the spine of the pliers with a 2" ruler marked on one side and a 5cm ruler on the other. (After some quick Internet searching I couldn't find an easy way to engrave or permanently mark stainless steel.)

If this proves useful, I'll probably print the rulers onto a self-adhesive label and put that on the pliers spine.

First photo shows the inch side - inches, half inches, 1/4 inches, 1/8 inches.

Second photo shows the cm side - cm and half cm.

I do have a Dremel and a fairly steady hand, but in my Internet searching last night I saw one posting that said engraving stainless steel cuts through the coating on it to prevent oxidation. I'm not a metallurgist so have no idea if that's true or not, but don't think I want to risk it.

But I don't have to as I found a printable 24 inch/ 60cm measuring tape here: https://printable-ruler.net/all-rulers/

I cut off the first 2 inches / 5 cm, then cut it down the center to get the two separate scales.

Trying to decide on the best way to mount it to the spine. Still thinking Scotch tape over it as that will protect it from splashes.

Of course I'll post photos when I'm done.

I'm enjoying getting the most out of this SAK as I can.

Though I wish I'd found out about this before I put this SAK together. Would have made attaching the rulers a lot easier.

True but it also isn't entirely rust-proof. The mirror finish improves resistance to rust.  :pok:

OK, here are the finished rulers. More functional then aesthetic, but will do the job.

With paper, then tape over it, I ran into clearance issues with the liners at the tool pivot so had to cut off the ends of the rulers, losing the last 1/4 inch or 3mm. :(

I guess I can dream about an engraved pliers spine, like what Victorinox does with the fish scaler.

Now that I've had my Deluxe Explorer for a few days, I've been surprised at how much heavier than a regular Explorer it is. I popped a few different SAKs on my digital scales and came up with:
- Pre-91 Explorer (no hook, solid scales):  103g
- Post-91 Explorer:  101g
- Post-91 Explorer Plus:  102g
- My mod Deluxe Explorer Plus:  140g

So the pliers added 38g !

For comparison, an '83 Champion comes in at 150g, while a post-91 Swiss Champ is 189g.

A post-91 Climber is 82g and a post-91 Deluxe Tinker is 123g (I'm guessing that the backside Phillips weighs more than the corkscrew).

So all confirm that the pliers add about 38g. Those are some solid pliers!

Made another improvement to the Deluxe Explorer...

I like my suspension clip as it lets me carry my SAK without feeling any weight in my pocket.

But I don't like it flopping around when I use my SAK.

So I super glued a small magnet to the back of the clip.

Now I can stick the clip to the SAK during use so it stays out of the way.

The magnet doesn't interfere with sliding the clip off and on my pocket edge.

Have to buy some more magnets so I can glue them to the clips on my other SAKs...

Since putting together my Deluxe Explorer Plus, I've carried a Swiss Champ and an Outdoorsman a lot and have really grown to like the scaler as an all-purpose poking/prodding tool. And the rulers are always handy as well.

I'm not ready to take the plunge and bust apart my Deluxe Explorer to add a scaler layer, but I was playing around and found that the tolerances between the corkscrew and liner were off just a bit, compared with my other SAKs. Off enough that I can slide a scaler between them and have a pretty tight fit. Maybe not tight enough to use it as an ice pick, but certainly for basic poking and prodding.

So I'm keeping an extra scaler in a pocket mini toolkit I always have with me and slide it into the Deluxe Explorer when needed.

I'm sure one day I'll either rebuild the Deluxe Explorer or just build an enhanced one - I already have a spare Explorer, scaler, pliers, and Plus scales.   :)
