Oculus Quest 2.
on: December 12, 2021, 07:27:29 PM
I was sorely tempted to buy a drone after reading Def's thread, but I have been looking at VR headsets since they first graced the market. I wanted to wait till I felt it was a good time to jump right in with better hardware and cheaper prices. I just bought today an Oculus Quest 2 with the idea that I can wire it to my PC and hopefully play VR games on STEAM. I haven't tried it yet, but I have read that such is possible. I got the 128Gb version which I think is the sweet spot personally. I was not planning on buying one until my next pay check, but I stopped in at Best Buy and found they had 2 in stock, which was better than last weeks visit where they only had the more expensive 256Gb headsets.

I couldn't wait to try this. I must way wow, and wow again. The effect is so much better than those cheap cell phone Google Cardboard VR handhelds. I didn't have much of a charge on the headset and now have it charging at the moment. But I had enough to update the software, install the cell phone App, and play a little with the tutorials. I found the Asian house to be my favourite background setting. I just love watching the Koi playing in the pond to my immediate right. I did install all the background and tried each out. they all feel neat, but that Asian house setting is my favorite for now. I also found that you can install Netflix on the headset. I am in awe. It simulates a theater like setting in a comfy mountain cabin. I feel like I am in the cinemas at the Station Mall. I was only able to play a little, but freaking cool all around. I was hesitant in buying this, but I must say, after just a short exploration, I cannot wait to dig deeper.

My only issue is that of space right now. Mind you I only tried this in sit down mode. I guess I can take this standalone to a larger free space and have a bit more freedom of movement. I still plan on sitting down hooked up to a PC...just got to try it later if I can figure out how to do it (Hardly any instructions came with this). I find the two controllers to be very ergonomic. I was surprised at how seamless they show up on the virtual space. Pointing is super easy with the laser dot.

I am off for Christmas vacation in a weeks time. I know what I will be playing with during my time off.  :hatsoff:

I just figured out how to link the headset with my computer using Wifi, and just successfully loaded Half Life Alyx.  :like:

I have found my max limit of wearing one is around 2 hours or so. I did buy and install Moss. What a game. You basically sit and control your little mouse companion Quill through a variety of platform stages...so far. I like how you can pet him and he responds. I love miniatures and this one ticks all the right boxes for me. Beautifully detailed scenery. This game is a keeper, although I am at a standstill currently trying to bypass some spiked vines at a particular location. This was how I found my limit.

On the plus side, I am loving the pro strap with attached battery pack. At least it will outlast me in any given scenario as the original battery gave up to 2 hours of play time, and with the added extra battery, at least double that time. I also got in, a set of silicon gear protectors in red from Amazon. In the package was a goggles clip on cover, a pair of controller pull overs which offers far better grip than the smooth plastic, a set of joystick pads for extra grip, a new face cushion cover, and a lens cover to keep the dust off of them in storage.

Overall, this was much needed, especially with the hand controllers. The side strap makes for added security as I can now grip the controller lightly and rest my fingers.

Just got Gun Club VR. An interesting range setting with various firearms...many you have to unlock. There is the target shooting scenario, zombies, etc. The guns that I was able to purchase via won in game money look amazing. Changing magazines is almost the real thing with no pressing the mag release button however. Still have to rack the slide to charge a handgun. A few DLCs come with it such as WW 2 and Western. Not a bad substitute for not being able to get to the range due to Covid ect.

Our kid got one yesterday and the Mrs was ecstatic, our other son has an older VR which he bought me a video game for Xmas but that’s through his comp, but since this is so unique the Mrs was like “I WANT ONE!” So needless to say look what’s on the couch  and well, since the kid had a referral code both of them got $60 toward games,,  :tu:

Huh, interesting, the graphics look off the off the chart so I can only imagine what it looks like with one of those pair of goggles, it actually looks like something the kid would like too, so I’ll have to show them, I mean my game would be “sniper elite” but the kid just bought me the game for Xmas for his computer vr, so there’s no point in having two of them, and I ABSOLUTELY suck at it, it took me 5min to pick up and hold a rifle before dropping it idk how many times trying to put it on my back! Yet all while everyone watched me on the kids tv, lol.. at least I had some help telling me what to do, then the kid try’s it and blows through the whole thing as I’m standing there with my jaw dropped! Like OMG!

That’s ok, the Mrs already attempted bowling and she walked right up to the desk and I screamed “YOUR TOOO CLOSE!” And she swung the imitation bowling ball right into the desk, but then she attempted tai chi and I was laughing my butt off, I even took a video which has her swearing about the program, but here’s a pic, lol

The kid was playing and I quietly snuck up without getting hit, and the Mrs took a pic, we had it where what he was seeing we could watch on the tv through the Mrs iPad.
