Gave away my Bond!
on: December 27, 2021, 06:59:04 PM
So, whilst visting the in-laws for Christmas I gave away my LM Bond (+ pocket clip  :poh:)

I've never really "bonded" with it  so it's no great loss (apart from £60  ::))

The thing is; do I replace it with a "Curl" or spring for the extra £££ and get a "Wave"? (I gave my first Wave away years ago  :waving:)

The locking blade can be an issue in the UK (subject to various caveats etc) but I really do prefer OHO which is not an issue here!

I have a Surge (2) a Rebar, a Wingman, a JPST and OHT and others but is the Curl worth buying over the Wave (or something else?)  :dunno:

I'm looking for full size LM's not smaller ones and they MUST be OHO.

I don't do EOD anymore so don't need a MUT type thing (maybe a Signal )

Your advice enabling is, as awlways, welcomed  :ahhh
They don't like it up 'em!

I prefer the Curl over the Wave because it's more comfortable sitting in my pocket.  I would say that if keeping a MT as small as possible is important to you, and you can live without a serrated blade and saw (or are willing to do a mod), then definitely get the Curl.

Around here the price difference is not that big - abouth 18 gbp. I also often use a saw and love the separate serrated blades on Leathermans. So I'd take the Wave.
I don't have any experience with the Free style clip that's on the Curl but the Wave's one (sold separately) rides lower. And it's much more comfortable than the ones on the Rev/Wingman and Skeletool.

This thread does beg the question: why? I mean, nothing wrong with liking your in-laws and such, but hey, this is quite a gift. I'm just wondering if you, err..., um... dislike it? ;)

The Curl and Wave are practically the same price here.  Due to that, importers are bound to bring in the a Wave more than the Curl.

Since you mentioned you have other MT, I’d vote for a Curl for ease of carry.

I’d get the Wave. Locking tools and the diamond file make it worth it for me.

Just re-read the post SurgeUK, sorry for my initial reaction.

Assuming the UK restrictions on locking blades don't apply to your circumstances, the Wave would also get my vote. If you don't need locking blades or a serrated blade or a saw, the Curl does have the advantage of lighter weight (although this is conjecture as I have no experience with it). I take it the Surge is too large for your purposes?
Cheers!

No issues DT  :tu:

I had a Wave years ago (within days of its release in the UK) and later gave it away when I got my Charge Tti, which I also gave away when I got my OG Surge (issued by work)

I seem to have given away several LM's over the years and kind of wished I hadn't now but, that was before I was "collecting" and found this place

To answer your questions:

Locking blades - They are not so much an issue for me as I'm not going to be wandering the streets of London with them and so would almost certainly be able to rely upon the UK's "reasonable excuse" defence and at work I have the "lawful authority" required so no issue at all there.

The Surge - I have two, one OG S/S and one B/O (Mk 2) The OG was issued by work, as a trial (they settled on the Gerber Pro Scout as it was cheaper  ::)) and the B/O I bought with my own hard earned  :D

The reason I let the Bond go is because I just didn't get on with it. It felt cheap compared to other LMs (which it is) but mostly I have concluded that I prefer OHO blades

Prices in the UK are currently £99.95 vs £112.95 - £114.95 (S/S vs B/O) in favour of the Curl but there's not much in it  :ahhh

NB: If the Curl had a non-locking blade I could EDC it here in the UK.
As for modding; I can barely tie my own laces

@surgeUK

I'm curious why you would want a Wave if you have the Surge, not that i am in any position to talk, i have multiples of both. IF the surge fits you the wave will seem pretty small. especially the scissors. It is nice to have the fixed file and saw, but at a cost of not being able to add any type of saw you want that comes in a t or u shank. and being able to use the file to sharpen your blade if needed. I'd hesitate to suggest the free series due to cost, i feel they are 40% over priced.

My ideal would be a charge/surge mashup with a cpm154 PE blade, an awl, the tshank adapter, I'd keep the eyeglasses screwdriver. and a way to store either the saw blade or the file in the handle scales so i wouldn't have to carry in a sheath to have all the tools..

Infidel!!!

come on, if the surge was the right size, and had a premium plain edge blade there would be no reason for the charge.
it is just a little too large for pocket carry and has a  420hc blade.
The tshank adapter, the awl. you know you want these in a wave. you know you do.

You mentioned having been issued a Surge and having "lawful authority", so I'm assuming you're in law enforcement or military.

Which tools do you use frequently at work? If you can do without a saw and serrated blade, then I recommend the Curl. If not, then Wave/Charge is the way to go.

There's also the Sidekick, which was a decent multitool for $30 but is way overpriced at $60 (compared to what it offers).

Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus
Current Leatherman tools: PST, Original Wave, Wave, Wave+, Blast, Bond, Curl, Style PS, Micra

home depot had them for black friday one year and about half were left over so they blew them out for $18 in january that year. I bought 11 of them, I think, gave them for presents, have 2 left.
$60 is crazy. I suppose it justifies the p2 at 99 and p4 at 139 tho.

If I could get a vote......Get the wave, If you don't like it you could give it to me (according to your post, that would not be problem) and I'll buy you a curl.

Just a thought

I admire you for being able to "give away" any MT. You are a better man than me. :salute:

I thank you awl for your replies and suggestions  :hatsoff:

So, to address various points/issues raised;

I do work in "law enforcement" so carrying "on duty" is not not an issue (off duty in the UK, is both another matter/topic  ::))

My work requirements are; ALL blades MUST be OHO* (locking is not an issue in the work environment)

*Off duty OHO is NOT an issue but locking CAN be

I do use a serrated blade at work cutting strapping/webbing etc (a combo blade works but needs to be substantial)

I don't need a saw/file but full size scissors are often useful :tu:

TBH: A Surge sized MXBS (I love my MXBS) or a OHO SwissTool would be ideal for work (with non-locking versions of both for days off )

You're not helping

The Wave sounds like it has everything you want except for full size scissors.  The scissors it has work well for their size.  I'd have to say get a Wave or a Charge Tti.  The Charge has a better blade material for the main blade and it has the hook on the serrated blade which I think would work well on plastic strapping, but it is half again the price of the wave.  :salute:

the more I carry the curl the more I agree with this..I swapped the saw for file in mine and its basically perfect.

Well this may be my last post here as I get banned ......   :o

But why buy anything?   ???

You have a Surge, (big and chunky and full functional),  you have a Rebar (small and compact, but still packs a punch);
you even have a Spirit (wonderful MT all round, cool and sexy)  .......

SORTED !!!

PS. Very generous of you giving away stuff - I wish I was you RL friend!!   ;)
