Leatherman Surge Wire Stripper Mod- Prototype II
on: May 01, 2022, 03:33:10 AM

As an HVAC tech I need tools the majority of people have no interest in, so that is what started my search for a better dedicated multi gauge wire stripper in the Leatherman Surge.  I have tried the SOG wire stripper tool but it's downfall is it's lack of well defined ends that stop the tool from bypassing and overcutting wire.
I first tried the Commercial Electric small multi-tool and I got overzealous and cut the tool far to short.  This is my second try.  I am ok with almost everything, except in grinding the tool down I still find the pivot gets loose and now falls out.  Any ideas how to make a pivot that doesn't restrict movement and that sits flush with the tool?  Any help appreciated!

Awesome job! I have thought about sacrificing an ES4 to do something like this, but using the CE small electrician's MT is a much more palatable alternative.

Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas about what to do for the loose pivot.

Thank you.  I talked to one of my friends and he mentioned grinding the tool down further and then using a center punch to drive the ground down pin minutely out and create a solid pivot joint, so we'll see what happens.

That is a very cool idea 8) :salute: :like: :like:

I hope it works well for you and you are able to tighten the pivot on it  :tu:

If the pivot goes all the way through, I would get out the old Ball Peen hammer and with the joint on a hard surface try a couple of solid, not overly hard hits on the pivot.  This should cause it to expand is become a bit tighter.

I was able to use the flat surface on my bench vice and get the pin to expand enough to hold, while loose enough to let the wire strippers move.  I have been using it on the job and I actually find it quite useful!
