SAK Scalpel Mod
on: October 07, 2022, 08:42:48 PM
I copied a SAK scalpel mod off of another user’s post but I’ve been having some trouble with galling when testing the fit with the spring and I think the steel might be too soft.

I’ve been thinking about doing another with a havalon piranta. Does anyone know what type of steel they use for their scalpel holder?

I don't know what Havalon uses, but I know a guy on youtube has used them a couple of times, there are some videos if you search. I believe he peened a large piece of brass in the existing hole, redrilled for the SAK size, and then ground the back down on a grinder wheel.  I've had cut and drilled a Wiebe (they were about 5-10 cheaper on ebay) down to fit my juice, and regular drill bits and the dremel worked fine on that.

If you're looking for an even cheaper option, there are some on Ali Express that have an extended area after the scalpel holder section. You could find them for ~10 bucks a month a go but now it looks like they are around 15. I just got mine and was going to test out cutting it this weekend and can report back.

I think some of these flippers could even be converted to be a stand alone layer in the SAK. It could be kind of cool to have a flipper SAK with a locking blade. I think you'd just have to cut the knife frame to fit, and then drill a hole for the central brass rode (and probably another for the base).

FYI - The guy on youtube was able to fit a size 60 blade slightly longer in there, but I think he actually used the backsprings from a saw. Not sure if you just have 24 blades or if you are using the backspring from the knife and that limits the blade size.

Thanks for this! Been copying that video and just have a little more shaping to do before it’s done. Making a 91mm into a lockback would be a pretty awesome mod. Will look into it once I’m done with the scalpel.

Actually picked up a juice last week too so I may eventually  try modding it with the Wieb like yours!
