Huntsman Dragonfly mod
on:
December 09, 2022, 04:37:24 PM
I cant seem to get an answer on this topic and i have researched a lot, will a Dragonfly 2 blade fit in a sak Huntsman without reprofiling the blade? If so, can i just take out the original large blade in order to fit it or do i have to take out the small blade as well?

I think NOT. This guy is really talented and in his description it says, reprofiled.

Its just confusing because i see plenty of his builds with the blade not reprofiled.

I am no modder. I am familiar with the video which I thought might help. What I noticed in the video is at 1:29 the blade of the DF2. The whole choil is missing. The blade also looks flatter.
I can only speak to the video and my observations. Here is my DF2 and a horrible attempt to show what I am speaking of.
If you've seen mods without doing anything to the DF2 blade I'm thinking you can alway dry fit one and see? It would seem the choil tip ( as it nears the the blade ) would hit the SAK spring
.
Again, I am NO modder just trying to help tho I am not sure I did.
Reach out to the fella in the video maybe he'll guide you. If you do the mod please take PLENTY of pics and come back and show us, pretty please

I think Fit to survive has said before that when it is not reprofiled the spring has to be modified and small blade wont fit. I will see if I can find the video I am thinking of.

Ive seen videos of him modding springs on an alox before. I have not problem doing that. Id prefer it over modding the blade tbh. I also dont mind losing the small blade as the DF2 blade kind of takes care of both sizes in one

Hello!
So 2 options:
- Without reprofiling the dragonfly blade, you need to hammer some brass on the pivot hole and re drill at 2.5mm THEN you need to fin an older scissor layer spring (without the hook) and reprofile this spring to fit the dragonfly blade (it's really hard because one grind too far and you'll loose the nice "clap" spring tension when closing the blade... Or worse, the blade won't close anymore.
- You reprofile the blade according to the shape of the main blade (and hammer some brass on the pivot hole and re drill at 2.5mm) but you get an issue because you need to find a blade/tool to go on the otherside of the layer... or another spring... and some bushing to compensate the width of the dragonfly blade.

Here are a couple of his vids that you may have seen already.
In this video he shows the modification to the old scissor spring to keep the blade profile intact.
In this one he shows the other option including hammering in the brass and redrilling the pivot hole.

The brass and re drill isnt a hard task. Finding an extras spring though may be tricky

Lot of work fitting the DF2 blade in thats for sure. Seems whatever route you got its not a drop in mod.
Very cool mod for sure tho. I hope you have a go at it and also post pictures along the way.

I see a few pre-1991 scissor models (climber/explorer/huntsman) for 20-40 dollars on ebay right now. Some of these mods really add up these days. Good luck.

I cannot tell you off hand however go to the bottom of this thread and use the SAKWIKI link, along the right side while in SAKWIKI there will be a topics in RED. Go to tools and then from there you can find scissors. The scissors link will have the changes made over the year which should help determine what you are looking for.
Again, I'm not familiar enough but the SAKWIKI is a great resource for such things.
Hope that helps.

Awesome thanks. As far as pinning the pivot hole on a dragonfly or Byrd, what size rod would i need for that?

2.5mm diameter (like the 91mm external pivots) it'll expand when you hammer it

Another consideration is, if you remove the blade layer and replace it with the old scissor spring/DF2 what are you going to do for scales?
I guess an alternative would be adding the new layer and making it a 5 layer knife.

I would like to keep the scissors. They are surprisingly useful. The scales are going to take the most consideration. Im thinking of doing blue g10 liners with titanium scales. But i may do micarta scales with the blue cross

G10 liners sound great. Gosh Micarta or Ti
. How the heck could I choose? Not that you're asking. Hmm,
. Great pics so far. Glad you've taken the plunge.
For sure I'd also keep the scissors.

Well i guess ill go with the Byrd Robin 2 over the DF2. Watch him reprofile ths blade and didnt have to pin it. It fit in the 2.5 mm rod. He did t have to grind a spring though. It was a deluxe tinker (also 91mm). So confusing lol

Be careful that he skip a lot of steps in the videos... There is a lot of little steps that are mandatory to success
