Griffin Pocket Tool materials
on: September 16, 2024, 10:25:23 PM
Last year I plucked a Griffin Pocket Tool out of the surprise box. I'm a little puzzled by it. It is silver and weighs ~25 grams. That's pretty consistent with Griffin's specs for a stainless steel Pocket Tool. But mine doesn't stick to a magnet. Any idea what this thing is made of?

Another photo of it can be seen here.

Hi. If it is not made of titanium (titanium is not magnetic). If it is made of steel, and this steel is not magnetic then it is stainless steel 304 or 314. Because 420 or 440c steel should be magnetic after hardening. Maybe it is a fake of the original

I agree that the weight is consistent with an original GPT in stainless steel.

It’s possible to really geek out over different types and properties of stainless steel, but the TL;DR version (as Andrii notes) is that some types of stainless steel are ferromagnetic while others are not.

Interestingly, I happen to have a XL Griffin Pocket Tool, and a magnet stuck to it easily.

I’ve never seen any more detail on what Griffin uses beyond “stainless steel”, so it’s certainly possible that the material has changed over the life of the product, and or that different sizes actually use different types of stainless steel.

I never figured there would be stainless steels that didn't stick to a magnet. No titanium badge for me just yet. Thanks for the insight, Andrii and Nate! :hatsoff:

Ordinary food stainless steel 304/314/316 has a low carbon content. its non magnetic.  It cannot harden but it welds well, so we use it to design various metal structures, conveyors, etc.
However, because of this it is soft. Its hardness does not exceed 5-10 HRC - Rockwell units.

Steel 420, 440c is hardened due to its high carbon content and we achieve the required hardness in our tools.
For example screwdrivers and wrenches, key chains and pry bars are 40-45 HRC. Knives, axes and loaded products are 52-55 HRC.

Low carbon content makes sense for food-grade stainless (as some people find that carbon imparts an undesirable flavor to their food). My ice cream scoop also did not stick to a magnet. Thanks for teaching me something new!
