Hurricane Helene
on:
September 29, 2024, 02:15:16 AM
Living is south GA we don't get wrecked by hurricanes too badly. When the interact with FL they tend to downgrade to a low powered Cat1 or maybe a tropical system. Last year one hit a town I in Georgia so bad I was beside myself. Like something I had only seen on TV, I was beside myself. This year Helene came through my area as a Cat 2 with reported winds of 100ish mph. Having your town being absolutely devastated is surreal. 750,000 people without power in GA. My part of the world alone is 57,000. They say it'll be days to a week for most of us to get power. Myself it'll be a few weeks at best. Thought I would share pics of what it's like over here.
This is a gallery: I'll add more as I take them

Dang man, I hope your ok, wish I could help,, when we lived in Connecticut our water heater died, so I ended up having to put a new one in, it finally got fully heated yet it was time for bed, but it was snowing and was to the point that the whole state lost power! We were without electricity and heat for a whole week, the kids didn’t have school, yet even though the schools got power back after the week they canceled them for another week because they had so much snow on the roofs, so they had volunteers using snowblowers on the roofs to make them safe for the kids, anyway, stay safe and hope everything works out for you!

Glad y'all are safe and I hope y'all get power soon.
My in-laws live just south of Houston so they see this type of weather. Last time they experienced a bad hurricane they had an inspector come check out the house. He said that it looked like the roof had lifted off the house based on the type of damage to the walls.

We had our power back up in roughly 12 hours.
My wife who's at her dad's house they don't know when they're going to get it back.
My youngest daughter said that they're looking at about a week.
My oldest daughter was headed to the mountains but got turned back near Tennessee. I can't believe that some of the towns that we've gone to over the years are simply gone now. The dam breaks up in North Carolina are affecting us down here in South Carolina.
I thought that Hugo was bad back in 89 but it had nothing on Helene.

Yeah it's pretty crazy. I hope I never see this kind of weather event again. Our governor said it's the worst natural disaster to hit out state. The linemen are here now working on things. They're expecting us to be without power for another week at least. I don't think I will ever take things for granted again.

We had some minor flooding and a couple of tornadoes in my area, but otherwise came out of this relatively unscathed.
I do know how it is to go without power for days or even weeks. Hurricane Fran hit us pretty good in 1996. What used to be woods behind my Dad's house is now a pond in part because the wind knocked all of the trees over. He was without power for 2 weeks. Retailers were auctioning off their generators to the highest bidders. People were fighting over access to gasoline. It was a crazy time.
I am glad to see Dave and PC posting. I hope Gary is okay. He hasn't been on the forum since the 27th. It will probably be awhile before power and internet service is available to him.

I made a little trip to Dollar Tree this morning. 99% of the batteries are gone. I saw an old timer asking if all the can openers were gone. Check out gal said they were sold out. That's two good items to have when the power goes off. Evidently a lot of people crashed DT and bought them all. The can opener wouldn't be an issue with MTO members, would it? The C cells on my radio pooped out on day one. Fortunately, I had spares.
I think the bridge below my house is okay. Maybe. I saw a truck go over it this morning. The road maintenance boys were down under the bridge looking things over last week. I would have felt better if there was an engineer of some kind instead of the fellows who do road work. Maybe one showed up?
I think my neighbor got his strawberry plants dug and in the truck before the hurricane. There is now a band of brown river sand 50 feet wide and several hundred yards long in that field. Lots of big trees down in the river. Mostly sycamore. Some of them have root balls as big as a dump truck. Milk and bread are back in Walmart now. I bought one of each. And some counterfeit Pop Tarts. Best wishes. G

I'm still seeing posting on one of my "Neighborhood" groups about power still being out.
I'm praying for the folks in Florida who are going to have to face another hurricane this week.
