Oh Deer!
on: April 27, 2025, 10:49:01 PM
These were taken a couple of weeks ago on St. Joseph island. I went for the annual Maple Syrup Breakfast at the Legion, The island has a lot of deer, so many in fact that if you ever decided to drive on highway 548, keep one eye on the trees both sides of the road. Deer ambushes happen frequently. Photos taken with a Pentax K3 and Pentax DA 18-135mm f3.5 - 5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR lens.

Happy to say, no hits  to date. Plenty of close calls like this one however. This time I just happened to have one of my cameras on the seat next to me.

Fortunately, I've never hit a deer while driving. The same cannot be said of bugs. Thanks for sharing those great photos, Chako! :tu:

I once had to pull over off the highway due to my ineffective windshield fluid doing nothing against the onslaught of bugs. Thankfully I always carry shop rags and Windex.

You are welcome Farmer X.

I think this thread was all about foreshadowing. I must have jinxed myself when I said I never struck a deer. The Deer Gods heard and fixed that oversight right quick.

I drove for 11 years and from coast to coast in the States and never came close to hitting a deer.  I was back home 3 weeks and hit my first one.  I had my last Beetle a week when a deer ran into the side of it and the next morning another ran in front of me and I hit it.  Believe me Chako, it was just a matter of time

I have never won a 1st prize in a national lottery! If there any way to jinx it more proper? I smurf at reverse rain dancing so hopefully nothing of that sort.

Barry Rowland,  :iagree:.

Vidar, I never had much luck to begin with, which is why I rarely if ever buy lotto tickets. My ex girlfriend was addicted to scratch tickets, I noted the ones I bought for her were never as good as those bought by her son.

 :D

Last year we replaced the old water heater at a relatives house. The old model and brand was long gone, and we just knew the physical space it had to fit in. So, as exact replacement was not possible anyway, we just bought the cheapest one we could find that fit the space. Somewhat different form factor, different brand, and likely different positions, threads and pipe sizes of the connections.

Having changed non-identical water heaters before the expectation was a lot of frustrating things going wrong and having to be voodooed and physically abused to fit. So I was not looking forward to this, and I read up on suitable swearing as I expected a lot would be needed. (Finish city names actually goes a long way in Norwegian... Helsinki! Kolari! Tampere! But I digress :)

Well there we easily removed the old water heater and put the new one in place. Water lines lined up almost perfectly, the power cable was just right, threads and connections were the same standard, and the stand height was easily adjusted. 15 minutes later we were done.

I went straight off and spent half a Leatherman on scratch tickets! :D
