The Spyderco DKPK
« on: February 28, 2010, 01:19:20 pm »
After all the talk about the UKPK, I sent Spyderco an email about where to get a DK penknife and the whole 'OH issue' and
I got this answer back from SFO:

"Unfortunately, we do not have a dealer in Denmark. We also have problems with Danish Customs."

Looks like it's official a 'No-Go' now..  :-\

While it's a pity I'm not really surprised.  :-\  You're never going to convince me that you couldn't OH that blade, and I don't think it fooled Danish customs/courts either. :(

So what was Spyderco trying to do here?  They made the hole smaller and countersunk it for
Denmark, and it won't fly?  Sounds like it wasn't completely thought out before marketing.

I think I'm right in saying that it's not a hole at all, but a countersink on each side.  I remember reading about some folks in Denmark getting these when they first came out so they seemed to pass muster at some point.  It's pretty obvious that just because there isn't a hole doesn't mean you can't OH it though.

LM seem to be far more on the ball, IIRC they've redesigned the Wave blade to create a plane that slopes away from the thumb so it looks like it's impossible to OH rather than just difficult.

Heya! Would just like to give my 2 cent on it. I just recieved mine today which I have had ordered and it arrived without troubles (I may just be lucky though)
As i see it, yes you can actually quite easily open it with one hand which makes me somewhat sad. That said, you cant open it with your thumb. You also have to squeeze your pointy finger against the other side to do it. And its somewhat slower to do that than opening it with two hands... Not that I think a police dude would care for that though. So all in all I am quite pleased with it but would like the opening to be tigther. It certainly aint one I will carry to the pub or a larger city where I think the police is.

Tell me if you want any more details :)

Welcome Lasse - and thanks for the info.

I think Spyderco might have been a bit quick off the mark here, and it seems incredible that they would market a product for a country that won't let it in! As Gareth said, the approach Leatherman have taken seems to make them acceptable, but I wonder if Spyderco simply won't give up their trademark "hole".

they would need to completely re design the blade for a oho or put a slippery material on the blade so it would be impossible

Quite right, I've got a leaf shaped blade with no kind of hole or stud that I can still OH quite easily.  As Lasse says, perhaps not quickly, but that doesn't matter under Danish law.

Welcome to the forum Lasse.

Welcome Lasse...
It really is kinda sad that the Spyderco 'DK' isn't legal in Denmark...  :P
As for you being lucky I think your right. It would have been seized in customs for sure.. ;)
