  • I may get older but I refuse to grow up.
As you all probably know by now Multitool.org is celebrating it's 7th birthday, we have a special 7th annyversary Wenger Blackout 10 for you and we've been giving away lots of cool gear. You may have also wondered why no giveaways in the Swiss forum. (yes, Tom has one, but we didn't have any hosted by the staff). Explanation is simple. :P We've been saving the best for last. :D

MTO isn't the only one who has a birthday this month. Tim a.k.a. felinevet and I also have a birthday this month. On the same day in fact, 31st of July. :D So we decided to let this giveaway end on our birthday.

The first prize is provided by the felinevet store on EDCSource and I just piggybacked on the giveaway and decided to add a bit of extra myself. ;)

You can visit Tim's (felinevet) store at EDCSource.com but I'm sure you all knew that already. :D

So what are the prizes?

Tim is providing this brand new Wenger Ranger 58.

and I'll add something ALOX-ie, a Victorinox Cadet. I'll let the winner choose the color,

either the

the

or the :vader:

:D

So you have something big for outdoors and something smaller for dressier occasions. ;)

The giveaway is opened worldwide but we do have some rules this time. We'll require you to have at least 20 posts in the Swiss forum to enter this giveaway. As the Swiss forum is one of the most popular boards on MTO I think no one should have a problem gathering that. :D Once you have the required number of posts you're free to enter.

What would we like you to do? Tell us/show us your two favorite SAKs, one for urban EDC and one for the outdoors and tell us why these two are your preferred carry. Pictures would be preferred (anyone has a digital camera nowadays, even a cell phone camera will do ;) ) but we'll also accept a well written entry without photos. :salute:

Entries are open till the 31st of July at 20h CET (16h EST) and I'll draw the winner sometime after that. I'll make a list with all the entries and randomise the list, then use random.org to draw the winner. I might be a little late with the drawing though. ;) You know :drink:

:D

Good luck to all who enter and have a great time.

So, peeking from within its cocoon is the Urban choice, the Vic Climber. This is the EDC that gets most things done for me, in a very svelte package.
This is an attractive version that has gorgeous yellow, eastern-oriented, scales. The rear scale has a Rooster emblem, and Chinese letters that are unknown in meaning to me.
For me the Climber has the necessary tools for most of the tasks I find myself doing, most of the time. And no unnecessary tools to bloat my pocket.
A close runner up for me though would be either a MiniChamp, or a Wenger Pocket Toolchest.

For outside carry I like the Vic Farmer. A good wood saw, and beefier blade, yet still svelte.
Rugged, dependable, beautiful. What more could you want? Besides, whenever I am truly "outdoors", I often have another multi-tool with me to share the tasks.
A close runner up in this category would be the Vic Huntsman.
Apologies for the pic quality, I used my only digital source, an iPod Touch, in low light.

Great post, neillcurrie. :tu:

Really liking the yellow scales with the rooster. Where did you get them? And that protective pouch is also  Did you make it yourself?

Hi
The "cocoon" I make for many of my knives and pocketable multi-tools from appropriately sized electrical shrink tubing. There are several tips that are necessary to get a perfect fit though, otherwise the knife/tool is hard to extract. PM me for more details, this thread may not be the best place to go into all this.
The Climber found me through the TSA confiscation program a short while ago. Concord is the hub for the selling off of all the unfortunate knives and tools that are taken in the NH, and possibly Boston, airports. This particular Climber was almost new, with minor marks on the scales that I easily buffed out. A cleaning and oiling made it gleam  :)

Thanks for the chance,

Wow, I have to pick only TWO SAKs. This just about mirrors my "Trip to NZ dilemma" where I had it narrowed down to picking a pair from two lists of ten.

Since then I have acquired a couple more SAKs and it makes the choice a little easier.

It's not perfect, but from my current stock the outdoor SAK would be my 11 dated model 2008 Soldier. the couple of things I would change are swapping out the blade for a PE or even a half serrated blade with the serrations at the right end (wtf were they thinking?) and adding scissors to make a Super Soldier. I nearly nominated my Hercules as I think that is a near perfect camping SAK already having scissors and the pliers would be so handy around the camp for everything from pulling tent pegs to lifting the billy off the campfire... BUT I would want the OHO linerlock main blade.

So, Soldier for outside..

I may be cheating a little here, but my favorite "indoor" SAK ia a Cadet with scissors in red Alox.. I have the parts for my one, I just need to get around to building it so I will borrow the pic of the one I built for another member here.
As an indoor or office job carry I can't think of much better.
I've always been a fan of the Wenger Traveler and to me the Vic Climber misses the same target in two areas, the 91mm chassis is not as pocketable and for urban carry I actually find the nailfile to be a handier tool than the Climber's pen blade. A Cadet Plus takes it a step further than the Traveler in the pocketability stakes and while you lose the backtools and T&T you gain the hand-candy of Alox. I'm going with the red because this is a knife that is likely to be used around sheeple and IMO a "little red Swiss army knife" is the least likely to startle the flock and cause a stampede.

Red Cadet Plus

The rooster is one of a series of knives done annually for the Chinese New Year (Year of the Cock, Rabbit, Tiger, etc.). At one time they were fairly regularly available on ebay. Now its like pulling teeth to get them.

Thanks to Nikola and Tim for the great prizes. :tu:

My everyday SAK is a Wenger Traveler.  Need the scissors, like the nail-file, and the 85mm length seems to rise better in my pocket than the 91mms.

If I'm up in the hills I tend to throw a Victorinox Huntsman in my pocket. A bit more rugged, and the saw occasionally comes in handy.

Just two SAKs?  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

More on that in a minute though. First off, Happy Birthday to Tim and Nikola  :drink: Two fine chaps  :salute:
Again, many thanks to all concerned for yet another giveaway

Back to business ...  ;)

Just two .... very tricky! I supose it all depends on the criteria. Here are a few of my favourites that didn't make the grade for this post:

  • Original Yeoman - Very close to being the "Urban" winner, and a regular friend that's called upon for light carry.
  • Original 1970's Outdoorsman with pruner and serrated blades - I like it that much I even managed to get a spare
  • 84mm Golfer - Forerunner to the 91mm Compact. On the very rare occasions I carry my KF4, it's the Golfer that accompanies it for scissors and beverage access equipment
  • Brushed Stainless Pocket Tool Chest - an excellent companion tool to a Gerber Dime and Preon Revo

I do like the standard red scales on these knives too, as they nearly always accompany a larger multitool, and the red scales calmly reassure any non-knife people around. It's nice to have a bit of bling around for special occasions though, and these are my pornographic poshies that are liable to get wheeled out ...

  • Deluxe Cigar Cutter
  • Buffalo Horn Scaled Commander
  • Leather Clad "Coach" Climber
  • Buffalo Horn Scaled Huntsman

However, the SAK I have secured several of (albeit different variants) is the Wenger Traveller. This is the perfect size and shape for a SAK IMHO. The can opener is a very useful general purpuse diggie pokie scrapie thing, there's no redundant knife blade, the flat driver locks, the scissor spring is robust, the nail file is very handy (pardon the pun), and the corkscrew takes the excellent Vic Mini Driver as well as allowing me to consume El Vino Collapso when it arrives held captive by wood.

LESS WORDS - MORE PICS!!

Wenger Traveller Variants:
  • Swissbuck Sidekick
  • Soft Touch 14
  • Alinghi Souvenhir
  • Classic 14 (Traveller)
  • Partially Serrated Traveller
  • Close Cousin - the Victorinox Climber Small
  • Wood 03
  • Evowood 14
  • Brushed Stainless Traveller
  • Metal 50

Of all these, all bar the Alinghi Souvenhir model get pocket time, and it's only a matter of time before the Alinghi comes out to play too. I think the one that I have the most affinity with however, is the brushed stainless version - it's like alox, but way way better  :D

The only thing "missing" is a Phillips, and although the nail file will help in that respect to an extent, I prefer to carry this with another tool. For light carry that tool would oftem be an IDL T7  :)

Heading outdoors, or at least onto the outdoor theme - it's time to beef things up a bit  >:D

Wenger Rangergrip 90

Here's a few comparison pics with it's older brother - the Swissgrip. This thing is a beast, and yet I still would accompany this with a smaller SAK such as a Wenger PTC/Evo 88 for "public" areas, PLUS despite being wider than the Swissgrip it actually has less tools - but it things went whoopsie daisy in the middle of nowhere, this is the SAK I'd want to have on me to deal with it.

Great saw - HUGE OHO plain edged blade with a lock that you don't have to put your fingers in the blades travel path to release, a can opener, file and moderate sized pliers. Everything I'd expect to need in the big outdoors, and nothing I wouldn't  :)

So, my choices are the Wenger Brushed Stainless Traveller, the Wenger Rangergrip 90 ... and an IDL T7 photobombing for comparison with the Traveller  ;)

Well, believe it or not, this is an easy pair of choices for me, but only because they're the only two choices I have ;)

First up for urban carry:  the Yeochamp

Pretty much perfect for urban carry for me.  Although my incoming Wenger EvoGrip 16 would actually be just as good for this as well, but since I don't have it yet, I have no pics.  It would probably be a bit better because it's a little smaller and maybe a bit more urban.

I will have to choose my Mechaneer for the outside SAK.

Doesn't have a saw, but it's Alox, and would be better suited for outdoors than the cellidor Yeochamp.  The pliers could be useful for some kind of outdoor tasks I would imagine.  I suppose as a bonus, the monkey fist could be used to beat back a bear or other threatening creatures

If I had the EvoGrip16, I would probably choose that for urban, and possibly the Yeochamp for outdoors with the mag glass, file and fish scaler (both of which could perhaps be somewhat handy for sawing tasks )  However, I'm not sure how good cellidor would be in wet environments vs. the alox Mechaneer

I meant to add a very happy b-day to all three of you, and thanks for this generous giveaway :salute:

I am also a big fan of the Wenger Traveler. I have that tool configuration on three knives, two are identical, the other has the sculpted scales. I prefer the slightlyslimmer variety, though there is a voluptuous feeling to the other that I can't deny is attractive.
And the 85mm chassis is just right. Less can be more.

Here are mine...

This is a Swisslite and a Farmer.

I got the Swisslite, knowing it had a red LED light, and wondering how that'd work out. On the first night I carried it, I was on a road trip at night in the back seat of a car and dropped something. The little red LED light was the EXACT right amount of light needed. The Swisslite otherwise is like a Classic with no toothpick. I'm honestly thinking about swapping out the tweezers for the toothpick. I use a toothpick much more often. I am torn between this and the Rambler I have, but find myself needing a small light more than the combo of the Rambler.

I would have picked my OHO Trekker for the outdoor role, but it was bestowed upon a nephew who is in the armed services, in hopes it will do him some good. The only other real outdoor option I have is the Farmer, and in that role, it is NO slouch. Solid, heavy duty (for it's weight class) and, I think, very beautiful. I think anyone who knows my tastes know that should I win, it'll be the Silver Cadet that I pick.

Thanks to both Enki and Felinevet for this giveaway, and an early Happy Birthday to you both, and to MTO! :drink:

My usual EDC SAK still happens to be my first, the Victorinox Climber that this site helped me pick out over a series of two polls. It has just about everything I want in a pocketable knife. If you recall I made Plus scales from Australian Silk Oak, again thanks to many of the modders and scale customizers here.

  This forum is AWESOME!  :viking:

Prefer two blades, the awl, and that bonzer can opener. Now when I go to open a can, or a family member wants one open, I go for the Climber instead of the Leatherman. Far easier, safer on any can types (so far), although it did take some getting used to.

The hook has come in handy more often than I ever gave it credit for initially. Great for paracord weaving too. Scissors & corkscrew have not been used much. Strange how your first ends up being your best.

The second All Occasion EDC SAK is the Vic Manager, which resides on my keychain. Have used the pen feature lots of times, people enjoy watching me write with it. The classy James Bond type of knife. Even when handed a pen I still whip this one out - because I can.  :D

Do want to get a Ranger to carry in the CamelBak Lobo hydration pack. Have seen a few cycling videos of them being used and have been impressed. Want one with a saw blade though, as you never know when one will encounter fallen trees on a trail, needing to make an overnight shelter, or having to splint something or someone.
Also joined a bike trail organization, Friends of the Weiser River Trail, and want to support it by volunteering to keep the trail free of debris.

  As for the Alox's in another SUPER AWESOME MTO contest, though as sexy as they are I already have a soldier and would graciously pass them on should I ever win. Am in this for the Ranger to be truthful.

My outdoor selection

First of all happy birthday you two! This is another very generous giveaway! Before I write anything I would like to say that unfortunately I cannot post pictures right now. So I will write out my choices.

First my choice for outdoors carry is a custom stayglow victorinox woodsman with chisel on the saw layer and nail file on the hook. I love the tool loadout because it doesn't have anything I don't use on it. Well, I'll admit I've never removed a cork with the cork screw, but it holds the eyeglasses driver so it is being used! Even the magnifying glass is frequently useful and is also a tool that is fun to use. It also feels cool to have something custom that a billion other people don't have.

My choice for urban EDC is one that many people like as well... the explorer plus. For me it is just a perfect urban tool. And it even has an inline philips which I value on SAKs. Basically it is the same as the woodsman, without a saw. It also has the pen and pin which I have found to be very useful.

Congratulations for you all. I hope a plentiful life for everybody, both in quantity and quality.

I'll resist the temptation to propose the Vic Swisschamp XLT, the King of SAKs, for both.
My outdoors SAK is a Vic Harvester with a strong blade (tested on whittling), a fearsome pruner blade, the best of all awls and a capable saw. I was thinking about a Wenger Ranger but this knife is efficient, especially with another single blade around (Opinel #8 Jardin, Spyderco Endura or Bahco 2444).
My urban EDC is a Vic Minichamp. It has a full manicure set of tools (scissors, nail file and nail cleaner), 3 blades to cut paper and open packages, including clamshell ones with ease, fine screwdrivers to change batteries at several gadgets, a cap lifter and an emergency pen. I paired it permanently with a Ladybug that complements its short blades. A very effective combo I never leave behind, being attached to my car's keys. I armed a Mountaineer with Plus scales for urban EDC but I rarely carry it, because the Minichamp is sufficient.
I still would like to test a Ranger though!

Well my camera is a bit on the fritz right now so writing will have to do.

Favorite 2 SAKs? Easily the Farmer and hunter.

Although it started with an old Vic Weekender that was passed down to me by my granduncle. Due to the sentimental value and bad condition of some tools, I got the Farmer as an urban EDC. It was the EDC of choice for a few years and now it is a vital part of the rotation. The reasons behind it are simple - it's fairly small so people don't notice it, it is very traditional so people don't freak out. Ofc the saw has to be one of the most used tools for some reason. The true brilliance however comes with the awl, or in this case the splinter extractor and scraper. It's been with me trough all sorts of ordeals like a car crash, massive concerts (I worked as a roadie), babysitting jobs and it shows why I went with a silver alox SAK - barely any signs of wear on the outside.

Now to the outdoors SAK, the Hunter. To be honest the most interesting tool on here was the serrated gutting blade. And I've used it for all sorts of things but I'm yet to gut anything with it. While it's been with me for around 2 years, it's seen a very disproportional amount of carry time and use. What I mean by that is while it doesn't get carried too often, when it does the result is spending a bit of time cleaning it and getting it into top shape.
It's simply big enough, light enough and versatile enough for my uses and needs. It's cutting performance is far superior to some of the acclaimed inexpensive knives, and although the tools give you options they also make you use the gray celled muscle in your head.
Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

The Farmer has always been the go to SAK for the woods...and lately, I'm becoming quite enamored with the spartan for urban/suburban carry, everything you need, nothing you don't, doesn't raise any eyebrows, and good condition used replacements can be had for under five bucks.

Happy B-Day x3!  :D

Thanks for the chance at another awesome giveaway!

Hmm, for urban EDC I'd have to say that my favorite SAK is my climber.  It has the smaller blade for use around "sensitive" people, tweezers and toothpick which get used more than I thought they would.  The ever useful scissors to cut misc tags and what not off of stuff for the kids, and a corkscrew to hold the teeny tiny eyeglass screwdriver.

For times when harder use of the main blade, and a stronger and easier to grip body is needed, I have to go to my Soldier.  The all metal build, and thicker blade gives me more confidence to use this knife harder and not worry about it as much.  The Alox body gives you a nice grip even when it's wet.  The awl is also amazing, and I've used it on more than a few occasions to make pilot holes.

For EDC I like my 84mm Compact (yes it's a 84mm with hook) :)

For Outdoor it's of course my 111mm Hunter in a very special edition. (Hook, 58mm scissors, serrated rescue blade with liner lock)

Hi
The "cocoon" I make for many of my knives and pocketable multi-tools from appropriately sized electrical shrink tubing. There are several tips that are necessary to get a perfect fit though, otherwise the knife/tool is hard to extract. PM me for more details, this thread may not be the best place to go into all this.
...

Maybe you could do an instructable post in another thread here in the Swiss forum. I'm sure other folks would like to see it and try it too.

Yes, I thought that might be the way to go. I'll borrow my wife's iPhone (no easy matter, I think it may be glued to her hand) for better pics next time I make one.

The rear scale has a Rooster emblem, and Chinese letters that are unknown in meaning to me.

If you like, post a close up pic and I can have my girlfriend translate it. She studied chinese, so if the words are really in chinese and correctly written you will know it soon. (even if it shows "My cat has hairy balls" or something...)

A tutorial would be welcome, if you could spare the time.

Here you go. It was tricky getting close enough without losing focus, and generating shadows.
